BREAKING: Sharks Fire Head Coach Peter DeBoer

The San Jose Sharks have reportedly fired Head Coach Peter DeBoer, along with assistant coaches Dave Barr, Steve Spott, and Johan Hedberg, per numerous sources.

Elliotte Friedman first reported the firing, but only that of head coach Peter DeBoer.
David Pagnotta reported that it was mostly a clean sweep, with the exception of Bob Boughner.

Assistant Coach Bob Boughner is expected to take over the Sharks bench, presumably on an interim role. The Sharks have also brought up former AHL Coach of the Year Roy Sommer from the San Jose Barracuda, where he’s gone 772-664-48-153, all in the Sharks organization. Sommer gets his first shot back at the NHL since being an assistant coach for the Sharks under Darryl Sutter over 20 years ago.

Evgeni Nabokov was notably a star goalie in San Jose at one point, but he’s been a scout/development coach since he retired in 2015. Nabokov will work with Martin Jones and Aaron Dell as the Sharks try improving their goaltending.

Mike Ricci is another notable former Shark, and he’s spent the last 12 seasons as a development coach in the Sharks organization. He’ll get his first shot behind the bench, but he’s definitely familiar with the players.

The San Jose Sharks have gone 15-16-2 this season for 32 points, good for 6th in their division, and 24th league-wide. They’ve lost their last 5 games, most recently a 3-1 loss to the Nashville Predators.

Peter DeBoer is in his 12th season coaching in the NHL. He’s gone 198-129-34 with the San Jose Sharks, where they reached the Stanley Cup Final. Dave Barr was hired to be the Sharks’ “Eye in the Sky” in 2017, and had prior experience with DeBoer, which is likely also why he got fired. He had been transitioned to working on the PK and with the defensemen. Steve Spott ran the Sharks’ PP, which had a conversion rate of 16%. That’s good for 23rd in the league. He also helped with the forwards. Johan Hedberg served as assistant coach and goaltending coach, but the Sharks’ goaltending has been subpar. Both Martin Jones and Aaron Dell have had sub .900 save percentages.

Bob Boughner had served as the assistant coach of the Sharks for two seasons before being hired by the Florida Panthers. After two straight seasons of missing the playoffs, Boughner was dismissed, and rehired by the Sharks. Boughner and his new crew will have their first go as the Sharks’ HC Thursday against the New York Rangers.
