Winter Meetings Wrap Up: Day Two

The Winter Meetings are here and it is time for the rumors of big trades and big signings to swirl. Generally, the meetings offer quite a bit of information on the market for free agents and what teams are up to. It’s best to call it the Christmas for baseball fans. Here is a wrap up by team of rumors and deals from the second day of the meetings.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks are attempting to upgrade their outfield. It seems that they are willing to dip into their prospect pool to do so. They are still intent on reallocating the Zack Greinke savings to be able to fill multiple holes in the outfield and bullpen.

Atlanta Braves

The Braves reportedly checked in on Anthony Rendon and Jon Heyman believes that the team thinks the dollar is a bit too steep for their liking. There are also rumblings that the Braves would be in on Marcell Ozuna if they cannot land Josh Donaldson. The Braves are intent to bring in a better bat after solidifying their rotation a bit.

Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles are reportedly looking to upgrade their rotation on major league deals. It seems that they will pay for lottery tickets in the bullpen. The team is also reportedly in on recently nontendered Jose Peraza. Most of what the Orioles are looking at would be to help move their rebuild forward. The Winter Meetings have been quiet for them so far, but the Rule 5 Draft could change that.

Boston Red Sox

Interestingly, the Red Sox are searching for a back up catcher on the free agent market, especially since the catcher market has a lot of options. Ken Rosenthal reports that the Red Sox haven’t gained any traction in trying to trade David Price. A likely landing place could be the Padres, as the Red Sox could agree to take on the contract of Wil Myers in exchange for David Price’s contract.

Chicago Cubs

It seems that the outcome of the Kris Bryant grievance is holding things up for the Cubs. They are not involved in many rumors, and it seems that it would be tough sledding to trade Kris a Bryant with the arbitration grievance hanging over his head.

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox have struck again at the Winter Meetings. They landed Nomar Mazara from the Texas Rangers in exchange for prospect Steele Walker. Mazara helps to solidify their corner outfield positions with Mazara and Eloy Jimenez holding down the fort. The team still has rotation and bullpen needs to address, and could make more moves as the Winter Meetings roll on.

Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds lost out on Didi Gregorius, who they were linked to. Japanese centerfielder Shogo Akiyama is reportedly meeting with teams during the Winter Meetings. It was tough to get a read on whether or not the Reds had a meeting lined up with him. The Reds have already made a splash with Mike Moustakas but could be looking for more.

Cleveland Indians

There isn’t really much news to report for the Indians. It seems that they aren’t going to bedoing much of anything splashy during the Winter Meetings. They have checked in on Chad Pinder and that is about it.

Colorado Rockies

The Rockies still have the question mark at catcher, but there is not much else going on. They are hoping that David Dahl can put it together this season and that Wade Davis has a bounce back year.

Detroit Tigers

The Tigers were pretty quiet entering the second day. They still want to add a quality catcher and are looking to take the next step in their rebuild. Other news to come out is that Michael Fuller is throwing again and is likely to return in July. The Tigers are hoping he can become something for them.

Houston Astros

The Astros were again peppered with questions surrounding the sign stealing investigation that is taking place. Astros are reportedly looking for a catcher and two more pitchers to add to their roster. The team is also considering a trade of Carlos Correa, as they face some payroll choices. It’s possible the team is heading into a retooling period.

Kansas City Royals

The Royals are looking to get some upgrades and play to their own strengths. The team feels it would need to be blown away to trade from the core of players it has. That being said, it has been reported that the Padres were interested in Whit Merrifield.

Los Angeles Angels

The Angels lost out on Gerrit Cole, but that didn’t stop them from making moves. They traded Zack Cozart and his entire salary to the San Francisco Giants in order to clear some payroll space. The Angels have said that they can afford multiple players making over $20 million. That could mean they are in on the third base market and exploring trades for high priced pitching.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers were also in on Gerrit Cole. However, it seems they will shift their attention to Madison Bumgarner now. The Dodgers seem compelled to make a splash this offseason, especially given their first round exit in the postseason.

Miami Marlins

The Marlins do not have any rumors to speak of. The Rule 5 draft may yield some nice additions to the roster for the Marlins. The team is said to be looking to upgrade their bullpen.

Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers did not land Didi Gregorius. The Brewers are, however, looking to upgrade their first and third base positions and have had talks surrounding that at the Winter Meetings. It seems odd for the team not to address starting pitching and it seems that there may be a step backward this year.

Minnesota Twins

The Twins really need to address their starting pitching situation. That makes sense, especially given the report that they are very much in on Madison Bumgarner. Unfortunately, location seems to have been an issue for the Twins in landing significant free agents.

New York Mets

The Mets have had ongoing discussions with the Pirates about Starling Marte at the Winter Meetings. The Mets do not seem interested in engaging with the arms race that seems to be happening elsewhere in the NL East.

New York Yankees

The Yankees picked their guy and got him. Gerrit Cole signed for 9 years and $324 million with the Yankees. It is hard to tell where the Yankees will pivot from here, but they will likely look to deal some contracts like JA Happ to get some salary relief.

Oakland Athletics

Oakland has been getting calls about Chad Pinder. The team is not really inclined to move Chad Pinder.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies really want to put together a winning ball club. They signed Didi Gregorius to a one year deal. This likely shifts Jean Segura to second base and gives the Phillies a really good infield.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Ben Cherington seems ready to make significant changes for the Pirates. He has engaged with teams in trading Starling Marte. He also wants to add to their position player depth. The winds of change seem to be coming to Pittsburgh.

San Diego Padres

The Padres have been linked to many deals this offseason. One of the ones going on right now seems to be a trade involving Whit Merrifield of the Royals. There is also speculation that Wil Myers could end up being dealt for a different bloated contract in order to solidify a different area. David Price of the Boston Red Sox is a name that has been floated.

San Francisco Giants

The Giants made a pair of interesting moves. They acquired Zack Cozart along with prospect Will Wilson. The team will pay all of Cozart’s salary. They also added a Kevin Gausman on a one year deal. There have been rumors that they will lose Madison Bumgarner to the Dodgers, but it seems like an unlikely fit.

Seattle Mariners

After unloading Omar Narvaez, the team is now in the market for a catcher. The Jerry Dipoto roster churn continues as he seeks out a winning formula. Teams have also checked in on Mitch Haniger. After the trade of Nomar Mazara, it’s possible the Mariners could attempt to cash in.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals are still looking for that left handed hitting bopper. Unfortunately, talks have been kind of slow and trying to find a fit has been difficult. The team has also said they do not expect a reunion with free agent pitcher Michael Wacha.

Tampa Bay Rays

Out of the Winter Meetings has come an interesting tidbit. The Rays anticipate to spend more money than they did this past season. It makes sense given where they finished in 2019. The team has also said they would like to add to their current outfield and bolster that area.

Texas Rangers

The Rangers struck a deal to send Nomar Mazara to the Chicago a White Sox in exchange for Steele Walker. The team clears the logjam that existed in the outfield. They are interested in bringing catcher Robinson Chirinos back into the fold as well. The team has also checked in on Nicholas Castellanos. The Rangers seem to want to make a splashy deal.

Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays really want to get back to winning. How they do that has seemed to be relatively unknown. It likely starts with pitching upgrades, but there haven’t been too many rumors floated around.

Washington Nationals

The team is still surveying the third base market at the Winter Meetings. The team has reportedly set up some meetings within that market. It remains to be seen if the Nationals can bring Anthony Rendon back into the fold or if they will be looking elsewhere in their pursuit of going back to back in the World Series department.
