Should The Sabres Acquire Alex Galchenyuk?

The Report

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Buffalo was one of four teams interested in Pittsburgh Penguins forward Alex Galchenyuk. “I do think Buffalo was one of the teams that looked at him,” said Friedman.

A Look at the Stats

Despite so far having a great month of December, the Sabres could use some more scoring. According to NHL.com, Galchenyuk has two goals and eight assists in 25 games with the Penguins this season. While he has ten points so far, he could really help out the Sabres. They just sent down Casey Mittelstadt to the Rochester Americans, who was having a rocky season with just four goals and five assists in 31 games played this year, according to NHL.com.

Where Could He Fit In?

Looking at the Sabres lineup right now, Galchenyuk could play on the second or third line. Head Coach Ralph Krueger would most likely have to do some more line shuffling but I’m sure he can find a spot for him somewhere on this roster. If I had to choose a line, he could fit right in on the third line. In the last few games the third line has featured Jimmy Vesey, Evan Rodrigues, and Conor Sheary, with Rodrigues playing center.

Like Mittelstadt, Rodrigues has had a rough year. NHL.com says that he has zero goals and two assists in 19 games played, he also has been a healthy scratch for most of the games this year. If the Sabres were to acquire Galchenyuk, he would be an immediate upgrade from Evan.

Could Zach Bogosian be Part of the Trade?

According to Darren Dreger of TSN, Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian has requested a trade. In just ten games played after returning from injury, he has zero goals and three assists according to NHL.com. While he just got back from injury, he has not been good since coming back. Watching him during the game against the Vancouver Canucks just a couple of weeks ago, he had four turnovers in one period. He could be a possible target for the Penguins, but I’m not sure if they would want him.

In conclusion, I feel like Galchenyuk could really fit in with the Sabres roster. He would definitely help out with scoring and could possibly help the Sabres clinch a playoff spot for the first time in a long time.
