The 10 Most Defining Devils Wins this Decade: Beyond Toronto
2020 is almost here, and the New Jersey Devils are hoping their bad seasons could end with a new decade. A new decade could show signs of a team changing, and the New Jersey Devils could be one of them. Once the Devils fix their issues with a new head coach and find a way to play better as a team, we could see a whole new Devils team this next decade. Let’s take these last couple of days of the decade to look at the top 10 best wins for the New Jersey Devils in this decade. Let’s start with a huge Toronto comeback.
What makes this win so memorable for this decade?
Our first win comes from the first year of the decade in 2010, where a comeback late showed the Devils had fight in them earlier in this decade. The New Jersey Devils, who were 1st place in the Atlantic that year, battled the Maple Leafs on February 5th, 2010. The New Jersey Devils struck first with a nice goal by Dainius Zubrus, who shot the puck top shelf past
Jonas Gustavsson while falling down. However, the second period was all Maple Leafs. Two power-play goals were then scored by Tomas Kaberle and Lee Stempniak. After that, another goal by Rickard Wallin gave the Leafs a 3-1 lead.
In the 3rd period, the New Jersey Devils were then able to get one back from Dean McAmmond. The biggest turning point in the game came when Alexei Ponikarovsky took a 2-minute penalty for hooking Dainius Zubrus. That penalty allowed the Devils to score the game-tying goal by Travis Zajac with 44 seconds to go.
What happened next shocked everybody in the Prudential Center. 22 seconds after that, a rebound from Jay Pandolfo gave the New Jersey Devils a 4-3 lead with 19 seconds to go. The atmosphere in the building from Devils fans must have been insane. The New Jersey Devils were then able to run out the clock, giving the New Jersey Devils a 4-3 win.
What happened next with the New Jersey Devils that season?
The New Jersey Devils won the Atlantic and secured a No. 2 seed in that year’s playoffs. Unfortunately, the Devils run for a 4th cup ended early, as the Philadelphia Flyers, who were the 7th seed, upset the Devils in 5 games.
