In Playoff News…
As usual, the AFC has already been set with their divisional leaders and titles. However, the importance of this last game for the Patriots is to get the bye for the first round of the playoffs. But also Kansas City wants the bye as well, so they’ll be looking to win as well as the Pats to lose.
But here’s how it looks for the playoff picture for week 17
The Ravens already have clinched a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.
Patriots (12-3): New England will clinch a first-round bye with a win or tie against the Dolphins, or with a Chiefs loss or tie against the Chargers.
Chiefs (11-4): Kansas City will clinch a first-round bye with a win over the Chargers combined with a Patriots loss to the Dolphins. In that scenario, both the Chiefs and Patriots would finish with 12-4 records, but Kansas City would own the head-to-head tiebreaker because of its win over the Patriots in early December.
Oakland, Pittsburgh, and Tennesse will be fighting for a spot in the playoffs. Simple right? Then there’s the NFC.
Already clinched in the NFC
Green Bay – NFC North division
New Orleans – NFC South division
Minnesota — playoff berth
San Francisco — playoff berth
Seattle — playoff berth
The Dallas Cowboys are looking to clinch the NFC East, but they need to win and the Philadelphia Eagles to lose. And vice versa for Philadelphia. Green Bay is looking for a bye, but there are several other teams that need to win, lose or tie to do so. They can get home-field advantage with a San Fransico loss. The New Orleans Saints is in a similar situation as Green Bay. And the 49ers are looking for the Seahawks to lose to get the West and Seattle needs San Fransico to lose. There are scenarios for them to get the first-round bye as well, but again very complicated.
In other news…
Three Patriots have been selected to play in the Pro Bowl; Cornerback Stephon Gilmore, linebacker Donta Hightower, and special teams captain Matthew Slater. The Pro Bowl will be held on Sun. Jan. 26, 2020, at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
A look at week 17’s game…
According to Patriot.com, the Patriots seem to have the edge on all three phases of the game. Which I believe to be true. True that the Dolphins have won their last four games and this is a much better team than when the Pats faced them in Florida in September, but it’s reported that the Patriots are going to treat this as a playoff game. So expect this game to be interesting.
