Three Senators Prospects Playing in the World Juniors

The Senators have been able to accumulate a very respectable prospect pool, which ranks high in the NHL. These are the three Sens to watch for during this year’s World Juniors.

Jacob Bernard-Docker

Also known as JBD, Bernard-Docker was a first-round pick (26th overall) of the Ottawa Senators after they traded down in the draft from 22nd to 26th pick.

A skilled offensive-minded defenceman currently playing for the University of North Dakota, he has shown signs of maturity and poise in his time in college so far.

He has three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in 17 contests this year. He is the only Senators prospect playing for Team Canada and will square off against college teammate, and fellow Sens prospect, Shane Pinto, as Canada is playing the USA in the first game of the tournament.

The 19-year-old defenceman has great on-ice vision and leadership qualities, he could be a captain of an NHL team someday.

In his first game of the tournament I noticed he played a lot of time on the penalty kill. He didn’t record a point in the contest, and had a +1 rating.

Tomorrow he faces off against another Senators prospect, Lassi Thomson, who is the captain of Team Finland.

Shane Pinto

Playing for Team USA, Pinto is the number one centre on a very talented American squad.

Pinto and Bernard-Docker both play for the University of North Dakota of the NCAA. this will spice things up, pitting him against his teammate. He already has two goals after one game in the tournament.

Born in Franklin Square, New York, Pinto was drafted 32nd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2019 NHL Draft.

He will be a force at the centre position for years to come, alongside many other great prospects that the Senators have in their organization. However, with a plethora of great prospects at centre, it will not be easy for him to make the lineup when he’s ready.

Lassi Thomson

Thomson is a Finnish-born defenceman with a booming shot, he has good size at 6’0″ 190 lbs but might need to fill in his frame a bit more.

He’s playing this year for Ilves Tampere of the SM-Liiga and is putting up solid numbers. In 23 games thus far, Thomson has six goals and four assists, for a respectable ten points.

He was selected to be the captain of Team Finland at the tournament, this is a great choice by Finland’s management.

A responsible defenceman in his own zone, but with significant offensive flash. He will be a stabilizing force on the Senators’ blue-line in the near future.

The World Juniors will be fun to watch for Sens fans around the world, especially with three of their prospects competing in this competition.
