2020 Outback Bowl

Happy New Year everyone, all of us at Overtime Heroics hope you had a fantastic holiday. Lots of football today, and we are going to start off with the Minnesota Gophers against the Auburn Tigers in the 2020 Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida.

The beginning of the game was immediately exciting, with Tanner Morgan throwing an interception on a slant route, but luckily for Minnesota, they held Auburn to a Field Goal.

First Half Summary:

After an interception and two field goals, the pace of the game was getting set. The game looked like it was going to be a defensive battle, and 30 seconds later, Auburn returns a kickoff for a touchdown.

After the kick return, Minnesota goes three and out, and it looks like Auburn has the momentum when Auburn’s punt returner muffs the football and Minnesota gets the ball at the 45-yard line. Minnesota drives down the field, and Mohammed Ibrahim runs in for a 16-yard touchdown.

Minnesota stops Auburn on the next drive and then scores on a wildcat on the goal line after a 35-yard pass to Rashod Bateman.

On the ensuing drive of this exciting shootout, Auburn drives down to the 37-yard line and passes it down the middle to make it a 17-17 game.

The first half was a roller coaster of emotion and excitement with interceptions, a fumble, and many great touchdowns. Minnesota goes into the half with the lead over Auburn 24-17, with 30 seconds left in the first half Tyler Johnson makes a one-handed tightrope catch by Tyler Johnson.

Second Half Summary:

Auburn got the ball to start the second half. They punt, Minnesota also punts. Auburn then scores on a wildcat formation.

Minnesota gets a 40-yard pass that would have given them the momentum they needed, but it was called back for holding. On third down, Minnesota throws a screen but nothing doing and Minnesota punts again.

At the end of the third quarter, the Auburn punter faked and threw a pass down the middle to the tight end, which was incomplete. The Auburn coach was angry when there was no flag. He thought the receiver’s hips were held, but the ball was uncatchable, so that was irrelevant.

Neither team was afraid to go for it on fourth down. Minnesota does that with 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, and “Auburn stops them by a fingernail” as the announcer describes it. Moments later, Minnesota stops Auburn on a three and out. Minnesota receives the ball, and Tanner Morgan airs the ball out to Tyler Johnson for a 73-yard Touchdown.

Minnesota stops Auburn’s next drive. After that, a wave of emotion and excitement came over me, Minnesota drove down the field to the Auburn 40 yard line with four minutes to go on fourth and one. Bryce Witham made an Incredible leaping one-handed catch to keep the drive going. Minnesota then inches forward and runs down the clock to close out the 2020 outback bowl.
