After an extraordinary 7-5 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 2. 2019, the Canucks fought their way through a seventh straight win against the New York Rangers on Saturday night.
While the Chicago game was definitely an entertaining match for neutral fans, it was quite sloppy on the defensive side. This match, however, was a lot tighter defensively for Vancouver.
Vancouver opened the scoring quickly with France-born Antoine Roussel scoring his 5th goal on a rebound chance. Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich tied the game later in the 1st period through a nice feed from Chris Kreider.
Though the Canucks seemed into the game after that quick first goal, they would have trouble getting the puck out of their own end for the majority of the game. Jacob Markstrom’s teammates owe him a 16-ounce rib-eye steak after his superb .973% performance in goal.
Markstrom was dialed in throughout most of the night, keeping the Canucks in it while the Rangers dominated offensively. This onslaught occurred while offensive passes were not seeming to click for Vancouver.
Lots of dump-ins, icings and questionable calls from the referees gave Vancouver some hurdles to jump throughout most of the game.
Vancouver grabbed, or even stole the victory thanks to a late third-period winner from Tyler Myers.
The Canucks now sit in a nicely cushioned, third place in the pacific-division with 50 points, with three games in hand on the leading Vegas Golden Knights. They will face the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Jan 7th, 2019.
