The current 2019-20 season for the San Jose Barracuda has been anything but exemplary as the ‘Cuda sit in last place in their division (11-18-0-2, 24 points). However, this past Saturday, Jan 4 the ‘Cuda had their biggest win of the season against the Tucson Roadrunners. They beat Tucson in a thrilling overtime game (5-4) with the debut of Zachary Sawchenko in net. The Roadrunners are currently sitting in first place in the Pacific Division and second overall in the AHL with a record of 25-7-1-0 (51 points). This is a colossal win for the team and it’s not by chance, as quite a few of the Barracuda roster have been turning up their performance.
Maxim Letunov had a three-point (one goal, two primary assists) game in that overtime win against Tucson. Letunov has five points (one goal, four assists) in his last five games and has already surpassed his 16 assist total from last season. Speaking of assists, the ‘Cuda center leads the team in that statistic with 18, is also fourth in goals (8), and leads the team in points (26). He is actually only two points away from matching his last season’s point total of 28 (12 goals, 16 assists, 57 games played) with only 30 games played this season.
Jayden Halbgewachs, probably the craftiest scorer on the team, had a two-goal game in the Tucson victory. Although Halbgewachs is a bit undersized (listed 5’8″, 160 lbs) he more than makes up for it with his skill. He has four goals in the last six games, is tied in leading the team in goals (11), and currently sits fourth in points (20).
Another player who has been turning it up for the ‘Cuda is Jonny Brodzinski. He had two points (one goal, one primary assist) in the Roadrunners’ game and 15 points (five goals, ten assists) in the last 15 games. Despite only playing 21 of the 31 games this season, Brodzinski is tied for fifth on the team in assists (11), fifth in goals (7), and sixth in points (18).
A player worth mentioning that is currently turning his season around is defenseman Nick DeSimone. In DeSimone’s first 19 games this season he only accumulated three points but in the last eight games he has racked up seven points (two goals, five assists). The only game he did not score in during the last eight games was New Year’s Eve against the Stockton Heat where the ‘Cuda were shutout. Hopefully, DeSimone can keep it going because consistency is going to be key to turning their season around.
Rumored to be next in line to be called up to the San Jose Sharks is Alexander True. If called up, True would bring some much-needed size to the roster as he is listed at 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds. True, however, brings much more than just size; he is third in the team in assists (12, tied), goals (9), and points (21). In the last six games he has two goals and two assists.
If the San Jose Barracuda can keep these performances consistent, they just might give themselves a fighting chance. Their next game is against the Ontario Reign on Wednesday, Jan 8 at 7 PM PT.
