Head Coach Gerard Gallant Fired from VGK!

The Las Vegas Golden Knights fired their head coach Gerard Gallant this morning after roughly two and a half seasons. During the team’s first season in existence, the 56-year-old led the team to the Stanley Cup Finals. Even though the Knights’ were defeated in this final by the Washington Capitals in five games.

This leads some to speculate the future of the current head coach of the Detroit Red Wings Jeff Blashill. During his tenure as head coach, the 46-year-old has led the team to a record of 148-177-50. During this season in which the team is giving up goals to their opponents at an almost historic pace, general manager Steve Yzerman has been pretty quiet about his feelings about the future of the head coach.

During a recent interview with Fox Sports Detroit, Yzerman said that “the team has had injuries from almost day one of training camp.” Yzerman continued to say that, “regardless of the injuries it is somewhat unfair to pin that on the coaching staff.”

The Speculation

This could lead one to speculate that no matter how many games the Red Wings team loses in the 2019-20 season, the head coach will be safe. Even if the team does wind up setting the record for the worst goal differential in NHL history, a record that they are on pace to set easily being outscored by 62 goals. This is on par with the expansion Ottawa Senators, who were outscored during the 1992-93 season by 89 goals.

It is difficult to tell if Blashill’s record as head coach would be better if the Red Wings roster had more talented players on it. At the American Hockey League level, Blashill coached the Grand Rapids Griffins to a record of 134-71-12-11 in three seasons in which the team won two Midwest Division titles.

Adding more talent to the Red Wings roster hinges on whether or not the team wins the draft lottery. The first pick in the 2020 NHL draft is expected to be Alexis Lafreniere, a left-winger who played most recently for team Canada in the World Juniors tournament who scored 10 points in five games and won tournament MVP. The Red Wings have an 18.5% chance of selecting number one overall in the 2020 NHL entry draft.
