It has been tough sledding for the 2019-2020 Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks started the season off with two straight wins. Despite winning their first couple of games, the Hawks have managed only seven wins for the rest of the season. As we enter the middle of January, Atlanta holds a 9-32 record. The Hawks have won five of those games inside the friendly confines of State Farm Arena. Atlanta continues to be led by the second year point guard, Trae Young. Young leads the Hawks in points per game with 29.1. Atlanta has also gotten contributions from John Collins, De’Andre Hunter, and Kevin Huerter. All three of these players are averaging double-digit points per game.
Although the Hawks have a solid corps of players, the wins have not come yet. Even though the Hawks are young, they continue to get better each game. It will be a marathon, not a sprint, to bring the Hawks back to the playoffs. If the Hawks stay with head coach Lloyd Pierce, the team could be a year or so off from making a run to the postseason. Pair coach Pierce continuing to improve, with the growth of the Hawks youngsters, Atlanta could be a threat soon.
Win over Phoenix
In a season where there have been numerous ups and downs, the Hawks celebrated a win over the Phoenix Suns Tuesday night. Atlanta came away with a 123-110 victory inside State Farm Arena. The Hawks put five players in double figures led by Trae Young with 36. Kevin Huerter scored 23 and John Collins chipped in with 22. In addition to these three leading the scoring output, they all registered double-doubles on Tuesday. Young had 10 assists, Collins grabbed 10 rebounds, and Huerter contributed with 15 rebounds. De’Andre Hunter registered 15 points in the win and Damian Jones scored 11.
The victory for Atlanta was spearheaded by a 39 point fourth quarter. The Hawks proceeded to outscore the Suns in the fourth by a margin of 39-27. This might have been the most complete win for the Hawks in 2019. Atlanta hopes to build on this performance with two games over the weekend.
The Hawks close out the week with games vs the Spurs and Pistons. Atlanta will travel to San Antonio Friday night before hosting Detroit on Saturday. Game time on Friday is 7:30 pm central while Saturday’s game time set for 6:30 central pm. The Spurs will enter the matchup 17-22. San Antonio lost to the Heat by a final score of 106-100. On the other hand, the Pistons will come to Atlanta 15-27. Detroit defeated the Celtics by a final score of 116-103. The Hawks are 2-1 against these two teams thus far in 2019. Atlanta is 1-0 against the Spurs and 1-1 against the Pistons.
Both games will be tough for the Hawks to win. If Atlanta can duplicate their Tuesday performance, it will be a fun weekend. Furthermore, the way the Hawks played on Tuesday allows them to compete with the higher tier of the NBA. You can find coverage of both games on your local Fox Sports South Affiliate. Atlanta hopes to crack the double-digit win total and get on a winning streak this weekend. Tune in to find out if the Hawks can take that next step in their process.
