Florida Panthers Trade Targets pt. 2
With the trade deadline fast approaching, it is time to look at potential Florida Panthers trade targets. With part one of this series we looked at the Panthers picking up Alex Iafallo and Ondrej Kase. We will look at a couple more names were to see if anything makes sense.
Out – Mark Pysyk $2.73 Million (1 year left, UFA)
The Florida Panthers have quite a bit of defensive depth, and as such, Mark Pysyk has been asked to play forward on more than a few occasions this season. This kind of depth is a strength that the Panthers need to seize. Pysyk has a cap hit of $2.73, so moving him out opens up a lot of possibilities to add to the forwards group. With Pysyk playing forward, the need for depth defense does not exist for Florida. Let’s look at a few more forwards who could help.
Target 1 – Jimmy Vesey
The Panthers trade deadline targets should included Buffalo Sabres forward Jimmy Vesey. Vesey was traded to the Sabres from the Rangers during the offseason, and is slated to be a UFA at seasons end. The cap hit for Jimmy Vesey is $2.275 million. This is a reasonable amount, as if any of these trades Pysyk and his $2.73 are going out the door. Vesey has totaled 14 points in 44 games this season with +11 rating so far. These are okay numbers, but Vesey is capable of more. Vesey had 35 points in 81 games just last year. A return to this form could really help Florida.
Target 2 – Blake Coleman
Potential Florida Panthers trade targets should include New Jersey Devils forward Blake Coleman. Coleman has a strange stat line with 19 goals and 8 assists on the season. Coleman also owns a +3 rating, which is all the more impressive when you consider that is on a bad team. This is the type of production that the Panthers could really use to bolster the offense. The cap hit for Coleman is at $1.8 million for one more year. That will cost the Panthers, but make this a great target.
After assessing these two potential trades, the Coleman trade makes the most sense from a Florida point of view. Getting a player with his production as well as another year will cost you. The Panthers should look at moving both a 2nd and a 3rd round pick, and well as Mark Pysyk if they want to see a trade like this completed.
