Troy Trojans Football

The state of Alabama is rich in football history. We all know the success of Auburn and Alabama. However, there is another smaller school that has come to the forefront. In addition to UAB, the Troy Trojans have seen a run of success in recent years. The Trojans moved to the FBS level in 2001. Since making the transitions, Troy has brought home six Sun Belt Conference Championships. While 2019 was an off-year, the Trojans hope their run of success continues.

Troy Trojans

Coach Larry Blakeney served as Troy head coach until 2014. During the Blakeney tenure, the Trojans advanced to five bowl games. Troy went 2-3 in those bowl games. Neal Brown took over in 2015. After a rough first year that resulted in a 4-8 record, Brown and the Trojans experienced loads of success. Coach Brown would win 10 games the next three years including an 11 win season in 2017. Brown would also lead Troy to a Sun Belt Conference title as well as a divisional title. Coach Brown concluded his coaching tenure leading the Trojans to three straight bowl games. Troy went 3-0 in those respective bowl games. Coach Brown left Troy after the 2018 season to take the head coaching job at West Virginia. Even with Brown’s departure, the Trojans had high expectations for 2019.

2019 Recap

Former Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey stepped into the head coaching vacancy. The Trojans took a step back finishing 5-7. Troy registered wins over Campbell and Akron in the non-conference. The Trojans conference wins came against South Alabama, Georgia Southern, and Texas State. With a 5-5 record, Troy controlled their own destiny the final two weeks of the regular season. Unfortunately, the Trojans were defeated by Louisiana and Appalachian State. Troy’s streak of making a bowl game ended at three. Despite the setback, Coach Lindsey hopes year two can bring the success we have grown accustomed to seeing.

2020 Schedule Preview

The 2020 Troy schedule is still being finalized right now. We know the Trojans will play three straight non-conference games to open the season, with the final non-conference game coming on November 21st. The first three non-conference games will feature Arkansas-Pine Bluff and NC State at home, while Troy will travel to UMass in week two. On November 21st, the Trojans will travel to Rocky Top to take on Tennessee. Troy’s home conference schedule includes Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, ULM, and Texas State. The Trojans will travel to conference opponents Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Arkansas State, and South Alabama. The 2020 schedule looks favorable, but the main question is how much improvement will we see? If there is a significant change, then Troy can have a successful 2020. On the other hand, if we see similar struggles, 2020 will seem long and hard for the Trojans.

Conclusion

Since the Sun Belt instituted the conference title game, the same two teams have met in the championship. Both years saw Appalachian State take on Louisiana. Troy plays in the Mountaineers division which makes the road tougher. The Trojans do get Appalachian State at home which could play a big role. Troy trails the overall series with a 3-5 record. While the Appalachian State game is important, the Trojans cannot overlook any other conference opponents. Troy has rebounded from a down year before. We saw the change firsthand going from 4-8 to 10-3. Coach Lindsey and his crew hope history repeats itself as they go from 5-7 to a double-digit win season. Keep an eye on the 2020 Troy team as they hope to compete for that Sun Belt Conference Championship.
