Why the 2020 Offseason Was The Best for the Yankees
Any offseason for the New York Yankees is always essential. The Yankees are usually known for grabbing those fantastic players in the offseason. But this offseason was much different than the past few seasons. There were moves made sure, but it felt like there was a lot more to it. With the new season coming soon, let’s look back at how the Yankees improved.
Signing Gerrit Cole
For starters, let’s look at the one thing every Yankee fan was impatiently waiting for. Fans were anxiously checking their phones for a notification to pop up from a reporter on Twitter, expecting the deal to happen. Then around midnight on Dec. 11, the dream of having Gerrit Cole on the Yankees happened. Cole’s deal was a nine-year $324 million contract with an opt-out in the 5th year. Acquiring Cole was the move the Yankees needed to make because after being eliminated by the Houston Astros again, they realized need to enhance their roster.
By signing Cole, the Yankees have improved their pitching quite amazingly. Brian Cashman wanted to make everybody who said the Yankees aren’t spending money as they used to. He did just that by signing Cole. Things are looking up for the pitching. Fans are optimistic that Cole will bring more titles to the Bronx. While getting a high caliber player was wonderful, there was one cherished player we had to say goodbye too.
Saying Goodbye to Didi Gregorius
Getting Cole was one of the two best moments to happen to the Yankees this offseason. However, we need to discuss one of the moments that fans sad. Losing any player to free agency and having them sign somewhere else is always tough. For the Yankees, shortstop Didi Gregorius was a player that Yankee fans wanted to see playing in pinstripes longer. However, fans were upset to see he signed with the Philidelphia Phillies on a one year deal. What he has done wearing that uniform has been insane. Do I need to mention how many clutch home runs he’s hit when it matters, especially in the playoffs? Regardless, he was a large part of New York’s playoff runs the past few years. If you’re a Phillies fan, get ready to see how good he plays not only offensively, but defensively as well.
There is one good thing about him leaving, though. Now that Didi isn’t playing SS for the Yankees anymore, Gleyber Torres will probably take over that position. What Gleyber did last year could put him in a major position to shine over what Didi Gregorious has done. But as one team says goodbye to a player, three teams say goodbye to the managers.
Astros cheating scandal ruins the Yankees rivals for next season.
You’ve heard the Astros cheating scandal time and time again, and you don’t want to hear about it anymore. For Yankee fans like me, though, you probably are liking what you’re seeing. Seeing the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros losing their managers as well as the Astros losing their GM is so satisfying. Both the Astros and Red Sox beat the Yankees in the postseason in the past two years. It’s nice to see Alex Cora, Jeff Luhnow, and AJ Hinch all punished for cheating, but for Yankee fans, this is so fun for us to see this unravel. How could this get better?
Well, how about seeing the New York Mets new manager Carlos Beltran getting fired? This offseason is like getting presents after Christmas! So to sum this all up, that’s 3 of our rival teams losing all key parts of their staff simply because of all of them being on the same team in 2017 that used trash cans to recognize pitches. I hope those guys get new teams somewhere and succeed there. Just make sure they get their jobs in the NL.
Throughout the last decade, the Yankees have had uneventful offseasons. Not going after big-name players have definitely proved why the Yankees have not gotten to the WS in the 2010s. I hope all of these moments will lead the Yankees to not only a title in this decade but for more in the future. If we do win more titles, we will look at this offseason as life-changing for the team in the Bronx.
