Your Five-Minute MLB Update: 2/1/2020

Here’s your five-minute MLB Update for Saturday, February 1, 2020. Check back tomorrow morning for the next MLB updates!

MLB News and Notes:

Arenado/Bryant: According to Ken Rosenthal, there is a strong possibility that either Kris Bryant or Nolan Arenado could wind up with an NL East team.

Citing an anonymous AL club’s internal projection, Rosenthal says the Braves, Mets, Nationals and Phillies are projected to be separated by fewer than five wins in 2020.

Pirates: Despite what it looks and smells like, Pirates GM Ben Cherington says the team is not in a full-scale teardown.

Reds: In the wake of the Nicholas Castellanos signing, Cincinnati continues contemplating whether or not to deal CF Nick Senzel. The two teams with the biggest needs would be the Cubs and Pirates, but an inter-divisional trade is unlikely.

Red Sox: Still searching for a manager to replace Alex Cora, the Red Sox are set to interview Luis Urueta.

Curtis Granderson: After spending nearly two decades in the league (2004-2019), Curtis Granderson is finally calling it quits.

Free Agent Signings:

Cubs: Chicago has signed 2B Corban Joseph to a minor-league deal. This continues a pattern of NL Central teams signing players formerly with other teams within. Joseph, Mike Moustakas, Nicholas Castellanos, Pedro Strop, and others have bounced from one NL Central team to the next this year.

Giants: San Francisco has signed free-agent righty Nick Vincent to a minor-league deal.

Mets: NY has added 1B Matt Adams on a minor-league deal.

Orioles: Baltimore has claimed righty Travis Lakins off waivers from the Cubs.

Phillies: The Phillies have grabbed (RHP) Reggie McClain off waivers from Seattle. The team has DFA’d (RHP) Trevor Kelley to make room.

Pirates: Reliever (LHP) Derek Holland has signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates. Holland made 51 relief outings last year for the Cubs and Giants: 6.08 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 8.8 K/9.

The Pirates have also signed infielder JT Riddle to a Major League deal.

Red Sox: Boston has signed former Dodgers lefty, Zac Rosscup.

Latest Trades:

None reported for Friday as of 5:00 Central time.

In Other MLB Related News:

Friday (1/31) marked the birthdays for three of MLB’s greatest players. Happy birthday, Nolan Ryan (73) and posthumously to Jackie Robinson (101) and Ernie “Mr. Cub” Banks (89). You all helped to shape the sport.

I’m not so certain this is very scientific, but it is interesting. Looks like the majority of the country still loathes the Yankees.
