Interview With Ohio State Football Commit Cameron Martinez

Cameron Martinez

Cameron Martinez is a four-star recruit from Muskegon, Michigan who just committed to Ryan Day and Ohio State. Martinez is an all-around player, literally. He played Quarterback last year but is listed as an athlete. He can also play receiver and defensive back, which is most likely what he’ll play at Ohio State. Martinez is also the reigning “Mr. Football” in Michigan and back to back Michigan player of the year, an outstanding accomplishment. Martinez does not know what position he will be playing at Ohio State but he will have all the assets to be successful under Day and his coaching staff.

Q: You are listed as an athlete, but what do you think your best fit is?

A: “Coach Day said I can do both but I have a good idea of playing defense”. This seems like the best fit for both the program and Martinez. That’s because Ohio State has a loaded offensive class coming in that consists of Julian Fleming, Paris Johnson Jr, and Gee Scott Jr. Plus star wideouts Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson are returning. However, with Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette leaving for the draft it leaves a gap in the secondary. Martinez will find a most likely find a role there under Coach Kerry Coombs.

Q: What was the recruiting process like with Ohio State?

Cameron Martinez

A: “It was a great experience, I was blessed to be in the position I am in. Ohio State just felt right with me and I felt the most comfortable”. Hearing Martinez was comfortable when he signed was key because former Ohio State secondary coach Jeff Hafley recruited him and recently left for the Head Coaching job at Boston College. Martinez waited until after National Signing Day to sign with Ohio State. After taking a few weeks to mull his options he would ultimately end up signing, capping off a tremendous first year of recruits for Ryan Day.

Q: What is your biggest goal heading into college?

Ohio State

A: “Winning a National Championship”. Martinez does not lack confidence and seems to be willing to do whatever it takes to get there. He is definitely unselfish about it because he is playing whatever position his coaches want him to rather than demanding to play quarterback or wideout. The last time Ohio State won a National Championship was in large part due to their defense. They held Heisman winner Marcus Mariota and one of the Nation’s highest-scoring offenses to only 20 points. It’s no secret defenses win championships and it will be exciting to see Martinez is a part of a championship-winning defense.

Q: Since you will probably play Defensive Back at Ohio State what are your thoughts on new DB coach Kerry Coombs?

Cameron Martinez

A: “He’s a great coach and you can tell why he’s successful. I can’t wait for him to develop me”. Developing players is something Coombs has been excellent at. While at Ohio State Coombs coached, and developed incredible talent. Under Coombs Eli Apple, Gareon Conley, Marshon Lattimore, Bradley Roby, and Denzel Ward were all first-round picks and not to mention Conley won rookie of the year. Coombs has had success every year at Ohio State and always gets the most out of his players. Expect the same to happen with Martinez.

What to expect from Cameron Martinez

From talking with Martinez I have learned he is a good, humble person. He wants the best for Ohio State and prioritizes winning. Martinez will probably be on the sideline for most of his freshman season unless he has a terrific camp and outplays the players already there. Although he will most likely not be playing much next season it will be the time for his most growth. He will learn Coombs’s defense and be ready for next season. Sophomore year for Martinez should be a good one as it typically is for most Buckeye DB’s. He is well known for his speed and when Coombs helps him get proper coverage technique he will be a lockdown corner or a great coverage safety. Plus his speed will make him great for blitzes and special teams. Overall, expect a competitor, a learner, and a great talent. Martinez will be a great addition to DBU.
