Jon Jones vs Dominick Reyes Preview
UFC 247 returns to the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. We’ll see the consensus greatest mixed martial artist to ever step foot inside the octagon, Jon Jones, putting that status and his LHW title on the line when he takes on another up and coming undefeated prospect in Dominick Reyes. The card also features a women’s bantamweight title fight in the co-main event, where Valentina Shevchenko will look to defend her title against Katlyn Chookagian.
Jon Jones (25-1 MMA, 19-1 UFC) defended his title twice last year, against Anthony Smith and Thiago Santos. The Santos fight was a close affair where he lost on one judge’s scorecard for the first time and he’ll be looking to right that this time around. Jon is a nightmare for any fighter, with his long reach of 84.5″, coupled with excellent distance management and brilliant fight IQ. Jon’s only blemish is a disqualification loss to Matt Hamill due to illegal 12-6 elbows, and not to mention, bad refereeing. In the past decade, Jon’s defeated the who’s who of the LHW division, playing with them inside the octagon like a cat with a ball of wool.
Dominick Reyes (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) has risen through the ranks quickly and recently headlined his first main event, where he finished the former middleweight champion Chris Weidman’s 205lb debut inside 2 minutes. Reyes matches Jon’s height of 6’4 but doesn’t have the same reach as the champion. He’s been an athlete all his life and will look to use his deadly left hand to do what 25 others failed to do, defeat Jon Jones.
Reyes has been asking to fight Jon for a long time now and he finally gets what he wished for. Jon, on the other hand, gears up for his 14th title bout, and a win would put him ahead of GSP for most wins in a title bout. This will be his 15th consecutive PPV main event. To put that in perspective, he’s headlined three quarters of his fights in his UFC career, which is insane come to think of it. Jon has a couple of fights left at 205 before he eventually moves up to heavyweight. Will he make it a smooth transition or will Reyes cause one of the biggest upsets in the world of MMA?
