Dear Cubs Fans,
dear cubs fans
The offseason has been rough, as all fans realize. The Cubs said goodbye to long-time reliever Pedro Strop, fan-favorite Nicholas Castellanos, and veteran pitcher Cole Hamels. They may have lost key pieces, but they did add to an already star-studded line-up, adding low-risk high-reward outfielder Steven Souza and a slew of relief pitchers. Now, Cubs fans are thinking these signings won’t replace what was lost. That is correct. These are just small pieces to a giant puzzle.
Losing Castellanos wasn’t as much of a hit as fans think. Down the stretch, he hit above average, but the Cubs record with him on the team was only 27-28. He didn’t help the team win enough games. Losing Strop could also play out better than keeping him, he is coming off one of, if not his worst season as a Cub, with an ERA of 4.97, a 2-5 record, and 6 blown saves. Looking at Strop’s numbers, it’s more of a blessing he’s with the Reds now. Arguably, Hamels was the biggest loss. He was around for just under 2 seasons, posted an ERA of 3.30 and held a record of 11-10 in 39 games started. His departure left a huge hole in the rotation, yet Cubs fans are more concerned with the loss of Castellanos.
At this point in the offseason, it’s time to stop looking at what was lost and get excited for what’s to come. The Cubs added Souza, who showed a flash of power potential in his last season in Tampa Bay, hitting 30 home runs. His 2019 campaign didn’t even begin before tearing his ACL in spring training. Not being an everyday player should lower fans’ expectations, but when Souza plays, expect him to be a positive contributor to the lineup. Cubs fans should also be hopeful to see bounce-back seasons from Yu Darvish and Kris Bryant. Cubs faithful, the darkness has not arrived. This team can still compete.
