Summer Onley – ‘I’ll Definitely Be Hunting a Finish!
Summer Onley (1-0) will take on Megan Johnson (1-0) in an amateur bantamweight contest on February 22nd, at the Barnsley Metrodome.
Summer Onley (1-0) will make her return to Almighty Fighting Championship, after impressing during her debut at AFC 15 last year. During her debut, she made short work of her opponent, Faye Rodgers (1-3), securing a belly-down armbar in the first round. Onley’s submission prowess comes as no surprise, considering she fights out of Gracie Barra Derby.
Her opponent, Megan Johnson (1-0), also impressed in her debut at Caged Steel 23. She, much like Onley, won via an armbar submission against Amy Derwanz (1-1). Johnson will be pleased to get back into the cage after her rematch against Derwanz, unfortunately, fell through.
The matchmaking for this fight is perfect. On paper, the two fighters match up extremely well, both having one win via armbar. Both fighters will also be putting their undefeated record on the line in Barnsley.
Who will win and put themselves in line for a title shot? Find out by getting your tickets from either the fighters or from Almighty’s website as soon as possible, whilst you still can!
What Summer Onley Had to Say
What was the main motivation behind you starting MMA and was there a particular fighter who inspired you?
My boyfriend introduced me to the UFC and once I started watching that I knew I wanted to train MMA. I remember watching Joanna Jedrzejczyk and thinking about how dominant she was against Carla Esparza. It made me really want to train. She was probably the first fighter to inspire me to start training MMA.
Can you remember how you felt making your MMA debut and how has that feeling changed going into your second fight?
I remember initially feeling nervous once the fight was confirmed. The girl I was fighting, Faye Rodgers (1-3), had much more experience than me, so that was a bit daunting. On the day, however, I was just buzzing and I couldn’t wait to get in there and show people what I’m capable of!
I feel a lot calmer going into this fight. As this is my second fight, I am more familiar with the setup now.
So far you have only fought for Almighty Fighting Championship, what features of the promotions made you come back instead of trying your hand at another promotion?
I like the fact that the standard is very high. There have been a few fighters, that initially fought in AFC, who have gone onto fight in promotions such as Cage Warriors and the UFC. So, I think it is a great promotion to start my career with.
How do you feel you match up with Megan, do you believe that you have an advantage in a particular area and how do you see this fight playing out?
Honestly, I think I’m better in all areas. I don’t want to say how I think it will play out, but I’ll definitely be hunting for a finish!
What is next for you after this fight and where do you see your MMA career taking you in the future?
McDonald’s immediately, after that I’ll be waiting to get another fight confirmed! I’d like to stay active. I’m hoping my MMA career will take off after a few more fights this year. I’m just excited to see where this journey leads me.
