Three Calder Trophy Candidates At Midseason

With the 2020 NHL All-Star game in the books, here are my potential candidates to win 2020 the Calder Trophy.

Quinn Hughes, D, Vancouver Canucks

Quinn Hughes is an electrifying player. Selected 7th overall by Vancouver in 2018, Hughes dazzles opponents with his slick moves. He has one of the hardest shots on the team. At the midway point, he already has 106 shots on goal.

Production-wise, he’s played in 57 games, with 8 goals and 36 assists. At 5’10, 170 pounds, Hughes is one of the team’s fastest skaters. Do not let his size fool you, he’s not afraid to take a hit, and has 16 penalty minutes this year. Not to mention 2 game-winning goals. Hughes’ brother Jack plays for New Jersey.

Cale Makar, D, Colorado Avalanche

Cale Makar is another young exciting defenseman. Despite an early-season ankle injury, Makar has been extremely productive. In 48 games, Makar has 12 goals and 30 assists for 42 points. He is also one of the leading rookies in points per game.

In 48 games, Makar has 4 game-winning goals and an impressive plus-minus of 10. At the midway point of the season, Makar is the front runner to earn top rookie honors.

Victor Olofsson, LW, Buffalo Sabres

Victor Olofsson of Buffalo is one of the team’s best scorers. The 24-year-old was selected 181st overall in 2014 from Sweden. Olofsson, who starred for MoDo of the SHL, has 18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points. With 4 game-winning goals, Olofsson is proving himself to be a top-six forward.

Olofsson and Jack Eichel give Sabres fans high hopes for the future. The Sabres are currently in 6th place in the Atlantic Division. With more time and experience, Olofsson only can only get better.

Honorable Mentions

With the second half of the season, anything can happen. Here is a list of potential candidates that could win the Calder Trophy:

Last year, Elias Pettersson of the Canucks took home the Rookie of the Year Honors. My personal favorite to win the award this year is Cale Makar of Colorado.
