Music and sports help us forget all the bad in the world. Jimmy Hendrix once said “music is the safe kind of high”, and the thrill experienced during a sporting event is unlike anything else. Here’s a list of songs that describe each EPL team’s season so far…
Liverpool – Never Gon Lose x Future
Lyrics: “we never gon lose, we never gon lose”
More than half of the season has gone and Liverpool have only tied one game and are yet to lose a match. The discussion turns to the Invincibles every passing gameweek, and some claim if Liverpool were to end the season undefeated, they would do it more impressively than the Arsenal side of 2003/2004. The Reds are sure to finish first. Now we wait to see if they do it without a blemish to their winning record.
Manchester City – Down Bad x Dreamville
Lyrics: “I was just down, down bad”
The Cityzens were predicted by many to complete a three-peat of Premier League titles ahead of the season. Instead, they’ve faltered from an early stage, with surprising home defeats to Wolves and Manchester United ruining their title pursuits. Injuries to Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane also hurt the champions, with Benjamin Mendy and Nicolas Otamendi looking like liabilities in the City backline. Pep Guardiola must now win the UEFA Champions League to make something out of a disappointing season.
Leicester City – We in This x DJ Drama
Lyrics: “Let’s toast it up to that life and I mean it”
Leicester City’s lightning-fast start to the Premier League season sees them in third place of the standings. The Foxes occupied second place for most of the season before recently faltering. The 9-0 victory away to Southampton was the highlight of Leicester’s season. Thanks to Jamie Vardy‘s scoring record, Leicester has a chance to finish top four this season and return to the Champions League for the second time in their history.
Chelsea – Young Money Salute x Young Money
Lyrics: “Better strap up your boots, before they start to shoot”
Frank Lampard‘s tactics and winning record saw him crowned as October’s Manager of the Month, the only manager not named Jurgen Klopp to win the award this season. Lampard integrated youngsters like Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, and Reece James into the first team with great effect. Chelsea now looks to cement a place in the top four and surprise a few doubters in the Champions League knockout rounds.
Sheffield United – Life is Good x Future, Drake
Lyrics: “This is fame, not clout”
Sheffield United are without a doubt the surprise team of the season. Many wrote Sheffield off as relegation candidates before the start of the season, yet the Blades currently sit ahead of Tottenham and Manchester United in the standings. Sheffield’s famous results this season include beating Arsenal at Bramall Lane and holding Spurs, Man United, and Chelsea to a draw. Sheffield are closer to securing a top-four spot than relegation, and they are having the season of their lives in the Premier League.
Spurs – Working Together x Gonzales
Lyrics: “If you don’t look good, then I don’t look good, then we don’t look good”
Tottenham endured a dreadful start to the season under Mauricio Pocchetino. It wasn’t until Jose Mourinho took over the helm that the North Londoners’ season started to improve. The likes of Christian Eriksen have been offloaded, and new signing Steven Bergwijn marked his debut by scoring a stunning goal in Spurs’ 2-0 victory over Manchester City. Tottenham will now look to crack inside the top four spots, but only if they work as a team.
Everton – Guess Who’s Back x Scarface
Lyrics: “Guess who’s bizack?”
Everton endured a nightmare start to the season under Marco Silva, losing to the likes of Sheffield United at home and getting outclassed by Liverpool’s kids en route to a 3rd-round FA Cup exit at Anfield. Club legend Duncan Ferguson took over as interim manager for a handful of games before Carlo Ancelotti took the job permanently. Everton now look like a different side, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin enjoying a career season. The Toffees have escaped the bottom ten and now sit in 7th place.
Manchester United – Changes x Tupac
Lyrics: “I see no changes”
Manchester United started the season with a 4-0 home win over Chelsea, but that result was certainly a false dawn. The Red Devils failed to replace Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera before the season’s start and looked out of sorts earlier in the year as a result. Marcus Rashford picked up great form, scoring 25 goals in all competitions before picking up a back injury that’s kept him out of action since the 15th of January. United have signed Bruno Fernandes in the January Transfer Window, but there’s a lot of work to do to make a Champions League spot, as they now find themselves in 8th place.
Wolves – Ballerz x Wande Coal
Lyrics: “All my guys are ballers”
Wolves took the league by storm after getting promoted from the Championship last season, and their good work has rolled over to this season as well. Despite a rocky start in the Premier League, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have picked up form in recent games. Wolves did the double on champions Manchester City and made it to the Round of 32 of the Europa League. Things keep looking up for Wolves, with the likes of Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez hitting form consistently.
Arsenal – La Nueva y La Ex x Daddy Yankee
Lyrics: “no no no no, no son iguales”
Unai Emery’s Arsenal was massively disappointing. After several disappointing results in the Premier League, it was a 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League that signaled Emery’s end as Arsenal boss. Club legend Freddie Ljungberg took over as interim manager for a few games before another former Gunner Mikel Arteta landed the permanent job. Arsenal then proceeded to beat Manchester United at home, hold Chelsea to a last gasp draw at Stamford Bridge and make it through the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Although things are still shaky in North London, Arsenal have managed to look a better side under Mikel Arteta.
Burnley – Did You See x J. Hus
Lyrics: “Did you see what I done? came in a black Benz, left in a white one”
Burnley have done a job in the Premier League this season. Some may have tipped the Clarets for relegation, but the likes of Nick Pope and Chris Wood have stepped up big time. Burnley’s 2-0 win at Old Trafford summarizes just how well they’ve performed this season for their standards, and they were a Jay Rodriguez finish away from defeating Arsenal at Turf Moor. Manager Sean Dyche deserves plaudits for his side’s good work this season.
Newcastle – Energy (Stay Far Away) x Wizkid, Skepta
Lyrics: “bad energy stay far away”
Newcastle United’s fans have called for Mike Ashley’s head countless times over the years. Although their owner remains in the hot seat, the Magpies have performed admirably for their fans this season. Despite a few glitches, the Geordies beat both Manchester United and Chelsea 1-0 at St. James’ Park. As long as the players give the Toon Army a reason to get rowdy at home, the good times should keep rolling.
Southampton – Welcome to the Party x Pop Smoke
Lyrics: “Baby welcome to the party”
As mentioned earlier, Southampton endured a 9-0 home loss at the hands of Leicester City earlier this season. Despite that embarrassing result, the Saints managed to turn their season around, thanks to the superb form of talisman Danny Ings. The Englishman now has 14 goals in the league and may be considered for the England EURO 2020 squad after injuries to Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford. Southampton will hope for Ings to keep the goals coming and keep the party going.
Crystal Palace – My World Is Empty Without You x Lee Fields & The Expressions
Lyrics: “My World Is Empty Without You”
Crystal Palace’s season has been nothing out of the ordinary, as Wilfried Zaha keeps proving why he’s so important for the Eagles. 3 goals and 3 assists may not seem impressive, but his equalizer against fierce rivals Brighton and contributions in Palace’s 2-2 draw away to Manchester City has meant a lot for his side. The likes of Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham continue to misfire for Palace, so it’s up to Zaha to lead the line.
Brighton – You Rock My World x Michael Jackson
Lyrics: “You rock my world, you know you did”
Brighton are the Premier League’s hipster team. They play fast-paced, possession-based football, and score incredible goals. Their style has also greatly improved thanks to the contributions of their attackers. Leandro Trossard, Aaron Connolly, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, and Neal Maupay have contributed massively to Brighton’s campaign. The likes of Mathew Ryan and Lewis Dunk are also solid at the back, making Brighton a fun side to watch.
Bournemouth – Tiiied x JID, 6lack, Ella Mai
Lyrics: “I been so down on my luck and stuff ain’t lookin’ up I need somethin’ that’s takin’ me higher”
We can all agree that Eddie Howe has done a massive job at Bournemouth. This season hasn’t been great, however. Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser look a shadow of their former selves, and with Joshua King and David Brooks missing games with injuries, the attacking threat just hasn’t been there. The Cherries continue to pick up woeful results, and that spells danger for Eddie Howe and their hopes to stay in the league.
Aston Villa – Pick Yourself Up x Big K.R.I.T.
Lyrics: “Pick yourself up”
It’s been a topsy-turvy season for Aston Villa. They’ve reached the Carabao Cup Final but continue to flirt with a relegation spot. Villa Park was the scene for the Villans‘ best and worst performance of the season; a 6-1 defeat to Manchester City and a 2-1 cup win over Leicester City. It looks like club captain Jack Grealish will move away from Villa, whether or not they get relegated. If that’s the case, Villa will face a huge task replacing their captain, who’s been at the scene of everything good that’s gone for his side this season.
West Ham – Hold On x Keznamdi
Lyrics: “This road dark and dreary so be strong”
Manuel Pellegrini is a respected figure in football, but his time as West Ham manager has been nothing short of disappointing. The Argentine tried so hard to click with his side, but it didn’t end up working for the Hammers. David Moyes took over after Pellegrini’s sacking, and the new manager bounce got them a 4-0 win over Bournemouth. West Ham are still in a relegation spot, however, and will need the likes of Felipe Anderson, Manuel Lanzini, and Michail Antonio to produce the goods for striker Sébastien Haller to thrive in his position.
Watford – We Gon Make It x Jadakiss, Styles P
Lyrics: “We gon make it”
Watford sacked two managers this season before getting it right with Nigel Pearson. Former manager Quique Sanchez-Flores couldn’t come up with the goods after Javi Garcia led the Hornets to a miserable start to the season. Watford then beat Manchester United 2-0 at home and went on a seven-game unbeaten streak in all competitions before losing to Aston Villa. They have since been brought down to earth and will look to try and play for it all in the league after crashing out of the FA Cup.
Norwich City – What to Do x Jackboys, Don Tolliver, Travis Scott
Lyrics: “Don’t know what to do”
Norwich City are a mixed bag. They started the season surprisingly after playing well against Liverpool and defeating Manchester City at home. The Pukki Party did die off, however, and the Canaries are in big trouble, sitting dead bottom in the Premier League standings after the halfway mark. It’s going to take more than the Finnish striker’s magic to get Norwich out of this slump. The likes of Todd Cantwell, Emi Buendia, and Onel Hernandez need to deliver for their side, and in a hurry.
That was my take on each Premier League team’s song of the season so far. With a couple of months left until the season’s end, this list may change after all.
