Miami shines on All-Star Saturday

The Miami Heat shined Saturday night in Chicago. Bam Adebayo was able to capture the skills challenge championship and Derrick Jones Jr won the slam dunk contest. Adebayo was able to defeat Spencer Dinwiddie, Pascal Siakam, and Domantas Sabonis to capture his trophy. Derrick Jones Jr won a slam dunk contest for the ages surpassing Aaron Gordon in a controversial descion in double overtime. Overall Miami took home two out of the three trophies on All-Star Saturday night as Duncan Robinson couldn’t make it a clean sweep. He was eliminated in the first round of the the three point shoot out.

Skills Challenge

The first event of the night was the skills challenge which requires contestants to finish a course as soon as possible. The only Heat player to ever win the event was Dwyane Wade, who did twice (2006 and 2007).

Bam Adebayo was the biggest underdog in the entire field as Vegas had him at nearly +950 when the event began. He surprised everyone as his passing abilities were incredible and even managed to surprise everyone by hitting some three’s. Dwyane Wade had the call on TNT and was just as shocked when Bam hit his first shot.

Bam ended up running the field taking home his first skills challenge trophy and proceeded to dedicate the award to his mother.

Dunk Contest

Derrick Jones Jr. also won Saturday in dramatic fashion as he took out Aaron Gordon in the dunk contest. Jones jr. displayed his incredible athleticism showcasing dunks that left the crowd speechless.

Aaron Gordon who many believed was wronged had scored a perfect score on every dunk prior to his final attempt. He pulled out Tacko Fall for his final attempt but failed to clear him cleanly which resulted in Jones Jr. taking home the trophy. It was one of the most entertaining dunk contests in a long time and the rightful winner was declared on All-Star Saturday night.

The only thing that could have made this night better was if Duncan Robinson had won the three point contest. Robinson however failed to get out of the first round as the competition this year was loaded. For Miami All-Star weekend was a success as they look to continue they’re chase for a top eastern conference spot in the second half of the season.
