Your Memphis Tiger
Mens Basketball team headed down to Moody Coliseum to try to avenge their earlier loss to the SMU Mustangs. The Tuesday night game was a lot of things, however, it was not pretty. Precious Achiuwa had a huge night that had the potential to be great.
That would be if it wasn’t for early foul trouble. Achiuwa had Memphis first four points of the night and looked to be unstoppable, until picking up two quick fouls in the first three minutes of last night’s game. This would prove to be trouble for the tigers who could not find any offensive rhythm and would go into the half trailing 32-20.
Down the stretch
Starting the 2nd half with a chip on their shoulder big plays by Precious and a three from Lester Quinones would spark a 10-0 run. This would help to bring the Tigers within two points. Precious would pick up two more fouls with about twelve minutes remaining in the game, one being a flagrant 1 call that would force him to go to the bench. This would prove to be beneficial for a SMU team that seemingly had no answer for Precious Achiuwa.
Tigers Can’t Catch A Break
Your tigers would fight down the stretch, however poor officiating within the last three minutes would prove fatal. Any momentum your Tigers tried to build on was taken away by the refs. The dagger would come with 1:31 remaining when Precious Achiuwa had a huge block down 54-48 to get the Tigers the ball back. At the very least it would’ve been a huge block if not for the ref on the court calling it a goaltend.
The play would go to review and be reversed back to a block, it seemed like it would be Memphis ball, however due to the rules it would no longer be Memphis ball, they would go by possession arrow giving the ball back to SMU. Memphis would fight till the very end, but ultimately fall to the Mustangs 58-53.
What Went Wrong?
Aside from the absolute horrid officiating that kept our best offensive player off the court for most of the night. Your Memphis Tiger Basketball team didn’t look good. Lester Quinones broke his shooting slump and went for 16 points, however they were all after the half. Turnovers proved to be fatal for Memphis once again, consequently turning the rock over 21 times to SMU’s 13.
Memphis who was down by 15 at one point has still not found a guard that wants to step up. Boogie Ellis shot 20% from the field while Tyler Harris shot 14%. The pair only combined for 4 assist the whole night. If your tigers want to win out and have a high seed at the AAC tourney or make the
Memphis Tiger Basketball Remaining Schedule
Your Tigers sit at 6th in the AAC right now with three games left to play on the schedule.
@Tulane- 12-16 (4-12)
Wichita State- 20-7 (8-6)
@Houston- 21-7 (11-4)
With the loss to SMU last night a top four seed in the AAC tournament is unlikely, consequently your only chance the tigers have is splitting with Wichita State and beating Houston for the second time which is certainly a task. Tulane is currently at the bottom of the AAC, but they will have to handle business there as well. If the Tigers fail to finish top four in the AAC they will be looking at having to win four games to make the NCAA tournament, whereas if they finish top four, they get a bye first round. It seems like our bubble dreams are more than likely done as we needed to win out to have hope on selection Sunday.
Your Tigers will need all your support in the last three games of the season, while this season has had its ups and downs lets finish strong and show them, we’ve got their back. These guys have fought through adversity all season long and have had every single thing they do thrown into the spotlight. They are a young team that shows promise of a bright future for Memphis Basketball.
