MLB Suspending Spring Training

With everything going on with the coronavirus, MLB is now considering an immediate suspension of spring training. If they do so, you can expect that the season’s start will be delayed as well.

The NCAA has suspended several conference championships. The MLS has suspended the soccer season. The NBA has suspended its season abruptly, after two players from the Utah Jazz tested positive for the virus.

If the MLB suspends spring training, you can best believe that the season won’t be starting on time. More and more players are speaking out about the virus and the concerns they have going forward.

The MLB understands that players want to play and that fans want a season, but Commissioner Rob Manfred is not about to take on the bad optics of being in charge of the only sport to disregard warnings. The players union has not yet made a public statement, but that should only be a matter of time.

I wrote the other day, that coronavirus was affecting MLB and some readers scoffed, calling it unnecessary panic. This virus has reached pandemic proportions as per the CDC; it’s no laughing matter.

Baseball will be back

The suspension of spring training isn’t going to resonate well with some fans, but MLB is doing the right thing. Sports are a great past time, but deaths? Not so much.

This isn’t a forever thing and baseball will return. It’s not likely that they’ll have time to make up games, especially if a suspension of the season lasts more than a couple of weeks. For now, I’d expect a season shortened to maybe 135-140 games, but it beats not having baseball at all.

While I don’t think it’s time to start hoarding toilet paper, Clorox wipes, gasoline and bullets, I do think it’s time for fans to realize the seriousness of this matter.
