Chris’s Mock Draft: First Five Picks
As we approach the 2020 NFL Draft scheduled for April 23-25. It was scheduled to be in Las Vegas but will be held in New York, City. With that said, here is my first mock draft of the draft season. Here are my top ten picks of the first round.
Round 1, Pick 1: Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Burrow, Quarterback – LSU
After nine long years with the Bengals, it looks like that quarterback Andy Dalton is potentially going to Jacksonville and LSU quarterback Joe Burrow becoming the replacement. After spending three years at Ohio State, Burrow transferred to LSU where he became one of the best college quarterbacks in the nation. In 2019, he and the LSU Tigers won their first national championship since 2007 when Nick Sabin was head coach. Now he is expected to be the face of the Bengals starting in 2020.
Round 1, Pick 2: Washington Redskins
Chase Young, Edge – Ohio State
Up next in my 2020 Mock Draft is the Redskins. Edge linebacker and offensive tackle are the top two primary positions for the struggling franchise. At the second selection, Washington selects Edge linebacker Chase Young from Ohio State. The sense I get is the Redskins would love to bluff someone into coming up for Tua, but no one will be willing to give them the requisite picks (aka the RG3 package) to do so. Standing pat and taking Young is plenty fine.
Round 1, Pick 3: Detroit Lions
Jeffery Okudah, Cornerback – Ohio State
At No. 3 overall in my 2020 NFL mock draft is Jeffery Okudah from Ohio State. This pick for the Lions is smart. The Lions just traded away their elite cornerback Darius Slay and signed Desmond Trufant. Okudah would likely start opposite of Trufant giving the Lions a much improved secondary.
Round 1, Pick 4: New York Giants
Jedrick Wills, Offensive Tackle – Alabama
Not only do the Giants need help on offense, but they need help on defense too. This selection is basically a “potential Joe Staley like.” The Giants need help opening holes for elite running back Saquon Barkley and Wills should help greatly with this. The Giants also need to protect their future at quarterback Daniel Jones who was drafted last season. That should be the most important part of their future.
Round 1, Pick 5: Miami Dolphins
Andrew Thomas, Offensive Tackle – Georgia
Everyone thought that the Miami Dolphins were going to get Tua Tagovailoa. Unfortunately, he won’t get picked until later. In the meantime, here is why the Dolphins chose Thomas. This pick will help protect Ryan Fitzpatrick this coming season and help open up holes the get the run game going. The first thing you need to develop a quarterback is to draft an offensive tackle to protect him.
