Jake Ryan and Ravens Agree To One-Year Deal

Inside linebacker Jake Ryan and the Baltimore Ravens have agreed to a one-year deal. The biggest caveat of this deal is that it is pending a physical. Ryan has spent time in back-to-back years on injured reserve. With COVID-19 making it difficult for teams to properly evaluate players, the Ravens have already had to nix a deal with Michael Brockers this offseason for reasons due to his physical. For this reason, this signing should be taken with a grain of salt until Ryan has passed his physical. With that being said, with no certified starter at either inside linebacker role, Jake Ryan enters a very thin inside linebacker room with a real shot at coming out as a starter.

A former starter for the Green Bay Packers, Ryan most recently spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars. A fourth-round pick in 2015, Ryan earned a starting role in his rookie year with the Packers. He started at inside linebacker for the Packers for 2 more seasons before injuries derailed his career. Ryan has 27 games of starting experience, which will be a very valuable addition in an inexperienced Ravens’ inside linebacker group. Boasting back-to-back 80 tackle seasons, Ryan is a sound tackler that can recognize plays and attack the football.

Effect On Draft

Heading into the draft, inside linebacker has been considered one of the Ravens’ greatest needs. This signing will certainly have some effect on the Ravens’ approach to inside linebacker in this draft. However, this move will not prevent the Ravens from selecting an inside linebacker early if one they covet is available when they are on the clock. You should still expect the Ravens to try to find a premier starter at inside linebacker in one of the early rounds. With that being said, if their draft board does not rank an inside linebacker high enough when they are on the clock, Jake Ryan would offer the Ravens a potential starter to fall back on if the draft does not go their way.
