The Browns Wanted One Undrafted Free Agent “badly”

Creator: Dan Gialluca

Before the lights dim on another NFL Draft teams are scrambling to line up and sign undrafted free agents in hopes of finding that diamond in the rough. Nearly every year, the NFL has one or two undrafted rookies surprise. Some fade away, some turn into stars, but most end up carving out solid NFL careers for themselves.

Andrew Berry and his staff feel they have one in A.J. Green if his deal is any indication. He also certainly looks like the easy favorite out of the list below to make the roster. Even with everything going his way, you just never know what might happen when (if?) camp rolls around.

Here is the Browns undrafted free agent list according to cbssports.com

After impressing a lot of Browns fans and media with his draft selections, Berry, as you can see, quickly got to work signing undrafted free agents. He certainly gave away his bet to make the roster by giving Oklahoma corner A.J. Green a massive deal for an undrafted free agent. The money may not look like much considering what players drafted pocket, but this deal shows that Berry and the front office highly valued Green. It seems as though they certainly feel he has a chance to make the team and provide depth in the secondary and on special teams.

Green is a big physical corner that uses his size to his advantage against smaller receivers. Over his three seasons as a starter at Oklahoma State Green put up 147 tackles, 5.5 for loss, 21 passes defended, and six interceptions. While Green has excellent size, plays physical, and produced on the college level, but he has one major question heading into the NFL. Speed. Per NFL.com, Green unofficially ran a 4.62 40 yard dash at the combine.

That kind of speed limits, unless he plays much faster, how an NFL team can use him. Maybe he sees time at safety? Or he is used as a match up corner? An ace special teams player? The Browns certainly have some sort of plan in mind for him and think he has a chance to make it. We will see if Berry and company found themselves one of those diamonds in the rough.
