Pernell McPhee Gives a Boost to Ravens’ Pass Rush

Pernell McPhee

Pernell McPhee is returning to the Baltimore Ravens on a one-year deal for the 2020 season. McPhee was with the Ravens in 2019, however, he spent most of the season on injured reserve. This move makes a lot of sense on both sides. McPhee is already familiar with the Ravens’ scheme and would not need to spend his rehabilitation time on learning a new defense. For the Ravens, they know what McPhee can do when he is healthy and they know the veteran leadership he brings to a very young linebacker group.

Pernell McPhee is on the wrong side of 30 and has had injury issues recently. However, when healthy, McPhee can get after the quarterback. In his seven games for the Ravens, McPhee managed three sacks, seven quarterback hits, and nine pressures on 43 blitzes. The Ravens would be extremely pleased if he can give similar production for the entire 2020 season. However, his playing time may see a big hit next season.

Although the Ravens did not draft any edge rushers, Pernell McPhee will still be in a battle for playing time. Jaylon Ferguson took over the starting role after McPhee’s injury and he will not be looking to relinquish that job. In addition to Ferguson, Tyus Bowser will also be looking to build on his strong 2019 season with an even better 2020 season. That’s not including any late additions or undrafted free agents making the team. McPhee will certainly have his work cut out for him as he looks to regain his starting job. However, the Ravens’ pass-rushing group certainly got a boost with this signing.
