The New England Patriots have signed tight end, Devin Asiasi, to a four-year contract worth $4.58 million with a 2020 salary cap hit of $833,240.
Last season, tight ends Matt LaCosse and Ryan Izzo both went out of the Patriots’ lineup with injuries. The tight ends from last season were not that consistent and got injured at times. The Patriots needed star tight ends who would be consistent and block/catch well. The Patriots drafted tight ends Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Patriots have not signed Keene, but have signed Asiasi.
The Patriots selected Asiasi in the third-round of the 2020 NFL Draft with the 91st overall pick out of UCLA. Asiasi started his college career at Michigan, but then transferred to UCLA for his last two seasons. Asiasi started in 12 games and put up career highs with 44 receptions for 641 yards and four touchdowns. As a senior in 2019, he earned All-Pac 12 honourable mention honors.
Asiasi must work on eliminating bad weight and improve on his technique as an in-line blocker. His athleticism and speed really stands out in space. Asiasi is a threat in the seam and in deep corners and over routes in play-action based attacks. When he learns to attack throws and body defenders with his frame, he will offer value as a target on third downs. Asiasi’s areas of improvement are achievable and he should be a play-making tight end with a future tight end one potential.
