Jadeveon Clowney was on the top of the market going into the 2020 offseason but was never signed by an NFL team because of the absurd amount of money he demanded. Should the Dolphins make another move at the edge rusher position and add Jadeveon Clowney to the roster?
Jadeveon Clowney Fit on the Roster
The Miami Dolphins were one of the most pathetic teams in the NFL when he came down to there pass rushers because they only sacked the quarterback 23 times. Clowney would add some help as a pass rusher, but as a defensive end he is more of a run stopper. He is an average pass rusher but is one of the most dominant run stoppers in the NFL. In his NFL career Clowney has never passed double-digit sacks in a single NFL season. Overall, if the Dolphins added Clowney to the defensive line, then he would be the best run stopper on the Dolphins.
Jadeveon Clowney NFL Career
The Houston Texans drafted Clowney with the first overall pick in 2014 NFL Draft. Clowney was added next to, pro bowl edge rusher, J.J. Watt, which made opposing teams worry. His career did not live up to its potential because Clowney dealt with lots of major injuries. His only full season in the NFL was in 2017 when he was a pro bowler. Clowney is a three-time pro bowler for the Texans, but since then he has been an afterthought. The Texans traded Clowney to the Seahawks in exchange for Jacob Martin, Barkevious Mingo, and a third-round pick. Overall, Clowney has been a disappointment in the NFL, but he will be hitting the prime of his career this season.
Other Free Agency Pick Ups
Currently, it would not make sense for the Dolphins to sign Clowney because they have already filled this void on the defense. The Dolphins added edge rushers Shaq Lawson, Emmanuel Ogbah, and Kyle Van Noy. They also already have Davon Godchaux and Christian Wilkins to help with the run-stuffing on the defense. They signed most of the new defensive free agents to long term contracts, worth a lot of money, so it would not make sense to pay another edge-rusher. Also, the Dolphins have other needs on the team, which Clowney would want too much money. Overall, the Dolphins already filled the void that Clowney would fit into and it would take up too much cap space to sign him.
The Miami Dolphins shouldn’t sign Clowney to the roster because he would take up too much cap space. Also, the Dolphins have younger talent that in the long run, will be cheaper options. They drafted and signed many young players that could potentially be better than Clowney in the long term. Overall, the Dolphins shouldn’t even bother with signing Clowney.
