Toronto Maple Leafs Update

Due to the NHL hiatus, the Maple Leafs have not played since March 10th. Since then a few things have happened with the organization. I will do a breakdown of those things here.

Nick Robertson Wins William Hanley Trophy

The William Hanley trophy is awarded every season to the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) most sportsmanlike player. Robertson had a fantastic 2019/20 season with the Peterborough Petes. He recorded 55 goals and 31 assists for 86 points in 46 games played. Robertson also had just 40 penalty minutes and played a very clean game.

Noel Hoefenmayer Joins the Marlies

Shortly after Hoefenmayer was released by the Arizona Coyotes, the Toronto Marlies signed the 21 year old to an AHL contract. Hoefenmayer is a left handed, shooting offensive defenseman. He played for the Ottawa 67’s this season in the OHL. He racked up 26 goals and 56 assists for 82 points in 58 games.

Mikko Lehtonen Signs With Maple Leafs

Lehtonen was considered to be the best european defenseman free agent available. Many teams were in on trying to sign the Finnish star. He chose the Maple Leafs and so they signed him to a one year entry level contract (ELC) worth $925,000. Lehtonen played for Jokerit in the KHL recording 17 goals and 32 assists for 49 points in 60 games this season. Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas thinks Lehtonen has what it takes to play for the Maple Leafs next season.

Zachary Bouthillier Chooses University

The young netminder has chosen to commit to the University of Quebec-Trois-Rivieres for the 2020/21 season. Bouthillier is a 2018 seventh round draft pick of the Maple Leafs. He currently remains unsigned by the team and his exclusive rights are set to expire on June 1st. The goaltender did not have great statistics this season. He finished with a 4.16 Goals Against Average (GAA) and .897 Save Percentage (SV%) in 45 games for the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL.

Kenny Agostino Added to Maple Leafs Playoff Roster

The Maple Leafs recently announced that Agostino will join prospect Nick Robertson on the Maple Leafs extended playoff roster. This is great news for Agostino has this caps off a great season for him. Agostino lead the Marlies in scoring this season with 27 goals and 22 assists for 49 points in 53 games. If everything goes according to plan and the NHL is able to resume play this summer, than Agostino could be a great depth option for the Maple Leafs.

Adam Brooks Re-Signed

On May 14th, the Maple Leafs announced that they had re-signed forward Adam Brooks. The contract is a two year, two-way contract with an NHL salary of $725,000. In just 29 games this season for the Marlies, Brooks recorded 20 points. He also picked up three assists during his seven game call up to the Maple Leafs.

Final Thoughts on Update Breakdown

Whether or not Robertson gets to play in any of the playoff games, just being around the team will be beneficial. I really like the Lehtonen signing as it adds depth to our defense. Lehtonen shoot left, but has played on the right side plenty of times. He is more or less a replacement for Ceci or Barrie. After all the hard work he put in with the Marlies this season, seeing Agostino added to the Maple Leafs playoff depth is great. I’m also happy with the re-signing of Brooks and the Marlies signing of Hoefenmayer. Both players will be key players for the Marlies next season.
