The Toronto Blue Jays select Austin Martin, 3B/OF from Vanderbilt. The Blue Jays select Martin as a shortstop, bringing more depth to their middle infield. Martin stand 6’0″ tall weighing 185 pounds. Martin was ranked as the number 2 overall prospect according to MLB.com
Austin Martin began his college career in 2018, where in 273 at bats, he hit .338-.452-.414. In his freshman year, he hit one home run and stole 22 bags. In his sophomore year, Martin hit .392-.486-.604 in 323 at bats. During his sophomore season, he hit 10 home runs, stole 18 bags, and walked more than he struck out. In his final season, Martin hit .377-.507-.660. Though only 69 plate appearances, Martin walked 10 times and only struck out twice.
According to MLB.com, Martin’s overall rank on the 20-80 scale is 60. The 20-80 scale looks at arm, hitting, power, fielding and speed. Martin’s hitting is his highest, at 65. His power rating sits at 50, with his speed and fielding at 55. Finally, Martin’s arm sits at a 50 rating.
According to MLB, Marin is the best pure hitter of the draft. According to his scouting report, “Martin has tremendous feel for the barrel and makes consistent, hard contact.” A speedster, Martin is a threat on the base paths. The only concern comes with his arm.
According to redsminorleagues.com, Martin is the best player in the draft. Martin has only played 16 games in the outfield, which came this past year. According to them, the only nitpick is his fielding.
Martin does have some affiliation with the Blue Jays. Martin said he played with Bo Bichette when they were younger.
