Mets Place Jed Lowrie on 10-Day IL

Jed Lowrie

The New York Mets have announced that they have placed utility man Jed Lowrie on the 10 Day Injured List. This IL stint is due to “Left Knee Discomfort.” Manager Luis Rojas said, “Later in the week, he’s [going to see] our doctor then we’ll go from there.” Hopefully for Lowrie and the Mets, this injury isn’t too serious.

Previous IL Stints

Lowrie is no stranger to being on the IL. Last season, before the beginning of the year, he suffered a serious injury to his knee. Anytime he would be close to coming back to playing, he would injure another part of his leg. From knee to calf to hamstring, Lowrie just could not seem to stay healthy last season. Lowrie only had 7 official at-bats last season, with one walk. In those 7 at-bats, he didn’t record a single hit and struck out 4 times.

Pre-2019 Knee Injury

In the off-season between the 2018 and 2019 season, the Mets signed Jed Lowrie to a 2-year deal worth $20 million. They brought him in as a utility man who could act as a plug to fill in just about any and every whole the Mets had. Coming off an All-Star selection and a top 20 finish in AL MVP voting in the 2018 season, the Mets had high expectations for Lowrie, and so far, it’s safe to say he hasn’t lived up to the hype.

What’s Next for Lowrie?

With the shortened season, being placed on the 10-day IL basically means you could be out for an entire tenth of the season. If/when Lowrie comes back, he will almost definitely not have a starting spot and it will be tough for him to see any playing at all, other than the occasional pinch-hitting appearance. With this being a contract year for Lowrie, this could prove to be detrimental to not only Lowrie’s Mets career. but possibly his entire MLB career.
