Top Five Potential Names for the Washington NFL Franchise

The Washington Redskins name is being taken away and changed by Washington football executives. So I brainstormed with my family and came up with five new names. These are the best that we came up with, in order, based on a 20-point scale.

Criteria:

  • How good the name sounds
  • The name must represent Washington D.C.
  • How the logo could fit with colors
  • Logo design and creativity

Tiebreaker: Name quality

Monuments

I heard this name and I really liked it at first, but I started to dislike it more and more as I thought about it. It is perfect for the D.C. landscape with Monuments of famous Presidents like Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. Also, the many landmarks of political buildings the capital keeps. The problem is the name. I couldn’t hear Jim Nantz saying, “Touchdown Monuments!” The name is too many syllables and isn’t strong and intimidating. (Still better than Washington Redskins)

  • How good the name sounds- 1
  • The name fits Washington D.C.- 5
  • How the logo could fit with colors (red, white, blue)- 3
  • Logo design and creativity- 3

Total Score: 12

Senators

The name is a great fit for the Capital’s politics with the President’s home and the Senators in the Capital Building. It is pretty strong for football and the logo could simply be the Capital Building. The name doesn’t have many flaws but just nothing too perfect.

  • How good the name sounds- 3
  • The name fits Washington D.C.- 5
  • How the logo could fit with colors (red, white, blue)- 4
  • Logo design and creativity- 4

Total Score: 16

Generals

Great name to represent the home of most generals with the Pentagon as the home of the nations defense. The name is very strong for a football team, but the colors and logo could be a problem. However, I do think a logo as the pentagon would be pretty cool. I think the name is great and could get creative but I still think there are better options.

  • How good the name sounds- 4
  • The name fits the Washington D.C.- 5
  • How the logo could fit with colors (red, white, blue)- 4
  • Logo design and creativity- 3

Total Score: 16

Stars

Now this is where we see the good names. The Stars is a name that represents America with the 50 stars on the flag to represent the states. Now that brings in it to the capital because the capital represents America and the stars help to represent America. The name isn’t great but the colors and logo could be amazing with professionals on the job.

  • How good the name sounds- 4
  • The name fits the Washington D.C.- 4
  • How the logo could fit with colors (red, white, blue)- 5
  • Logo design and creativity- 5

Total Score: 18

The Best: Defense

My brother said this name and I thought how ill a name like Defense would be. The emphasis and power the name brings and the creativity for logos, is what makes this name incredible. It fits in with D.C. because they are the home of our nation’s defense. It is a double meaning for football with the chanting of “defense” and having your own name be Defense. I can just hear a commentator scream, “Touchdown Defense!!”

  • How good the name sounds- 5
  • The name fits the Washington D.C.- 5
  • How the logo could fit with colors (red, white, blue)- 4
  • Logo design and creativity- 4

Total Score: 18

Whether you like these names or not, or want other names to be considered, there is one thing we can all agree on; any name is better than Redskins.
