Alex Smith Cleared For Football Activity

After a horrendous leg injury in the second week of the 2018 season, Alex Smith is cleared for full football activity, according to ESPN.

The Injury

When the injury happened during the first quarter in 2008. No one thought that he would ever play football again. When ESPN did an E:60 documentary on his recovery in May of this year. it showed his ups and downs. From getting infections in the hospital, to battling his way to a full recovery.

Alex Smith Two Years Later

On Friday, ESPN’s Stephania Bell sat down with Washington’s quarterback to see how he’s doing almost two years later. Here’s what he had to say:

“Everyone was in agreement that my bone was in a really good place.” Smith told ESPN on Friday. “I had healed a lot. They said that given the combination of the rod and where I was with the healing process, I had zero limitations and could even resume some football activities.”

“To hear them say that, from a life standpoint, they wouldn’t restrict me from doing anything — I could go skiing or snowboarding tomorrow if I wanted — then on top of that, to get the green light that I could practice, get contact, that I had healed up, that much was pretty wild to hear. I didn’t know if I would ever hear those words.”

What’s Next?

At the age of 36, Smith knows that this is just the first step to playing football again. His contract runs through the end of the 2022 regular season or maybe the playoffs if they get there.

If Smith wants to become the starting quarterback for the new Washington team, then he would have to beat out second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who the team sees as the rising star of the franchise.
