Diamondbacks: Opening Weekend Disaster

Arizona……We have a problem. An Opening Day meant for success turns to a weekend filled with disasters for the Diamondbacks. Friday, July 24th, the D-backs headed to San Diego to face the Padres. What looked like a possible easy series win turned into a downward spiral for this young team. Arizona had the defense and offense to create an unstoppable motion leading towards a playoff spot. However it was over before it began.

MadBum Tries To Bring The Fire

Madison Bumgarner started Game-1, attempting to earn his first win as an Arizona Diamondback. Madbum was scoreless through almost six innings until Eric Hosmer launched a three-run HR giving the Padres a lead. The D-backs defense backed up Bumgarner, however, it was the offense that failed Arizona as the first W of the season slipped through the stitches of a baseball. Although Calhoun helped the team earn the first run of the game, it wasn’t enough to overcome the damage Hosmer and San Diego caused.

Offensive Equals Non-Existent

The D-backs dropped Game-1 and were going into Game-two, as Robbie Ray took the mound against Lamet. What looked to be a possible comeback for Arizona turned into nightmare before the end of the fourth inning. Although Christian Walker hit a double making this a 1-0 game, Wil Myers quickly hit a two-run home run getting the Padres back in the game. Arizona tried to even the score, but the game slipped through the cracks when Manny Machado got his first homerun of the season.

D-backs Make A Comeback

Unfortunately, the team was unable to bounce-back from their shortcomings. Now The D-backs could only look forward to stopping the Padres from possibly sweeping the series. The Padres took the lead early in the game, but in the end the D-backs were able to pull off their first win of the 2020 season. Right off the bat (no pun intended), it is safe to say that the offense will be the biggest obstacle this team will be facing. The D-backs had a total of 19 hits, yet only seven runs were scored. Meanwhile, the Padres had a total of 21 hits, netting 15 runs.

Time To Get To Work

It’s too early in the season to predict where this team will land, but Lovullo and the Diamondbacks will need to regroup. They need ot focus on their plan, and stratgeize what needs to be fixed in order to be one of the 16 teams that will head into the playoffs.

Signing players like Calhoun and Marte will not be useful when the rest of the team lacks the power to create an unstoppable offense that can be feared in the MLB. Needless to say the D-backs have to work quickly to make up the disaster created on Opening Day weekend.
