Dallas Cowboys to be Lethal in 2020

The Dallas Cowboys are primed to be an offensive force this season. Rookie first-rounder CeeDee Lamb is the most exciting selection since Ezekiel Elliott and for good reason. Lamb is considered a generational talent that is often compared to DeAndre Hopkins. His best comparable, according to PlayerProfiler.com, is Jerry Rice. That kind of addition to an already potent offense can be a turning point for the Cowboys’ future success.

Cowboys in the Air

Dak Prescott finished last season second in the NFL with 4,902 yards on the sixth most attempts (596). Veteran receiver Randall Cobb and tight end Jason Witten have both signed with new teams leaving behind 83 targets each. This sets up Kellen Moore and Mike McCarthy with younger, more dynamic options in Lamb and fourth-year tight end Blake Jarwin assuming the vacated roles in Cobb and Witten.

There’s a total of 1,357 receiving yards up for grabs in 2020 in this offense. Cooper and Gallup only played in the slot for 20% of the time last year. Cobb was the primary slot receiver in 2019 but was not dynamic enough to play outside. Lamb is known for his ability to play both on the outside and in the slot, giving Dallas more flexibility on offense. He projects as the immediate starter in the slot and a great candidate to absorb those vacated targets. Lamb could see upwards of 90 targets this season, but it’ll be up to him and Dak to see how efficient Lamb can be. I would not put it past new head coach Mike McCarthy to feature someone like Lamb consistently if he’s producing.

Jarwin also looks to be heading in the right direction. In his final four games of 2018, he posted a 20-228-3 receiving line. He was a breakout candidate heading into his third season until the Cowboys re-signed future Hall of Famer Jason Witten. This move hampered some of his production, although he did contribute more consistently. With Witten gone, Jarwin is once again a breakout candidate as the starting tight end.

Gallup to Overcome Odds

The Cowboys were also one of six NFL teams with two 1,000 yard receivers in Cooper and Gallup last season. Some fear that the addition of Lamb will take away some opportunity for Gallup in particular, but fear not. Gallup is their primary outside receiver, with Cooper and Lamb likely to rotate and share the slot and “Z” receiver snaps. That means that Gallup has a solidified role in this offense as the “X” receiver, and if anything, Gallup may be more efficient than he was last year.

Stacking the box against Zeke is a death sentence if you leave Cooper one-on-one. Elliott has also proven that he’s more than capable of catching passes out of the backfield, which only makes this offense even harder to cover. With a more talented slot receiver in Lamb, Gallup may be left as the defenses perceived third or fourth priority, opening up some room for improved efficiency. Defenses will have to pick their poison this year if everyone stays healthy.

Cowboys Rushing Attack

It’s no secret by now that the Dallas Cowboys feature one of the premier rushing attacks in the NFL. Ezekiel Elliott leads the NFL in rushing yards (5,405), scrimmage yards (7,024) and touches (1,169) since entering the league in 2016. Even with the loss of Travis Frederick, the Cowboys have enough depth to fill in the role adequately. Recent fourth-round pick Tyler Biadasz was graded as a top-three center for the last three seasons at Wisconsin.

Dallas also has Connor Williams and Joe Looney, who will likely start this season at left guard and center, respectively. The Biadasz selection looks promising, and Cowboys fans are accustomed to Looney and Williams filling in when needed. This offensive line should be the foundation of success once again for the Cowboys in 2020.
