The Pirates Sign Ind. League Pitcher, Henderson Alvarez

The Pirates have officially signed free agent pitcher, Henderson Alvarez. Alvarez has been pitching with the Milwaukee Milkmen who play in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

Alvarez’s Career

The 30-year-old made his MLB debut in 2011 for the Toronto Blue Jays. In the same year, he was sent down to minors, only to come back in 2012. His best year in the big leagues came in 2014 with the Miami Marlins. Alvarez had an ERA of 2.65, three shutouts, and 111 strikeouts in 187.0 innings. He also had a record of 12-7.

After that, Alvarez bounced back and forth from the majors to the minors. Finally finding his sport in Independent Baseball. With the Milkmen this year, Alvarez had a 2.25 ERA in only four innings.

How Can They Use Him?

This could be a great pickup for the Bucs, an experienced pitcher with decent stats. The best spot for him though could be the bullpen for now. Pittsburgh’s bullpen is depleted with five relief pitchers on the IL. That’s not counting the two starters on the IL – Joe Musgrove and Mitch Keller.

Alvarez so far has a career ERA of 3.82 and 302 strikeouts. He could definitely be useful for the Bucs, again if they use him right.

The Pirates series with the St. Louis Cardinals has been canceled due to Covid-19. So, this will give the Bucs more time to acclimate him to the team.

The next three days are big for Pittsburgh; they’re welcoming a new pitcher and they have time to ponder their last 16-games. With a record of 3-13, these three days could be a good thing. They can rest their bullpen, and it allows the players on the IL to return if needed.

The signing of Alvarez could really do wonders for a team that really doesn’t have much pitching. With pretty good stats in both the majors and minors, Alvarez could give the Bucs the push they need to start winning.
