DODGERS – MARINERS GET SET FOR FOUR-GAME SERIES

Marco_Gonzales

With six straight wins, the Los Angeles Dodgers are firing on all cylinders now and sit atop the National League West at 17-7. This week, the Dodgers will host the struggling Seattle Mariners in a four-game set.

Since losing two games to the Padres last week they beat the Padres 17-2 in the final two games of that series and then swept the Los Angeles Angels on the weekend.

The teams play in Los Angeles twice then move to Seattle for two. The Dodgers won the first game 11-9 in a slugfest on Monday night.

Mookie Betts Delivering In August

Heading into Monday’s game, Mookie Betts had 7 HR and 13 RBI in first 13 games of August. Three of those home runs alone came last week in one game against the Padres.

Betts now has 6 games where he has hit three home runs. Johnny Mize and Sammy Sosa also had six three-homer games in their careers. Betts is only 27 years old though while it took Mize until he was 37 and Sosa until he was 33.

Betts had two runs, two hits, a home run and two RBIs as the DH for the Dodgers in Monday’s game against Seattle.

Cody Bellinger still struggling to regain his 2019 MVP form, hit two home runs last week against the Angels. He had not hit one since August 3rd. He has been mired in a 4-32 slump and currently has an OPS of .586 to go with a .187 batting average.

Los Angeles Dodgers Pitching Staff Looking Sharp

Opposing teams have a .202 batting average against the Los Angeles Dodgers which is third in the league. Their 1.04 WHIP is also third, while their 2.46 ERA is the best in the league.

Clayton Kershaw has managed to find some of his old form in his last outing against the Angels. He did give up a solo home run and two walks in seven innings to beat the Angels on Friday.

He is 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA and a WHIP of 0.82. Kershaw started the season on the injured list. He is slated to start against the Mariners on Thursday.

Ross Stripling pitched Monday lasting only three innings as he gave up six earned runs, eight hits, and two strikeouts.

Tony Gonsolin goes for the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight coming in as a fill-in starter. Already optioned once, he has a 0-0 record and an ERA of 0.00. He fanned 8 batters in 4 2/3 innings last Wednesday against San Diego.

Mariners Last In A.L. West And Losers Of Six Straight

For as good as the Dodgers have been this season, The Seattle Mariners have been equally as bad.

They were swept by the Houston Astros over the weekend and lost two of three earlier in the week to the Texas Rangers. To be fair two of the Houston games were losses by one run.

The Mariners have a team .221 batting average which is 5th worst in the league. Their .301 on-base percentage is 26th, while the 84 runs they have scored is 21st.

A pair of Kyle’s, Seager and Lewis, are bright spots as Lewis leads the way for the Mariners with a .316 batting average and four home runs, while Kyle Seager leads the team with 19 RBI.

With both the Seager brothers playing each other for four games, Corey and Kyle we should see some good duels at the plate between the two.

In Monday’s game, Kyle was .310/.388/.536 with two runs on three hits and a home run and 2 RBI. Corey was .306/.359/.611 with two runs on two hits and a home run and 3 RBI.

Mariners Pitching As Bad as Their Offence

With a 1.39 WHIP which is 23rd and a 5.75 ERA that is 29th, Seattle is in for a rough year on the mound.

Marco Gonzales was Seattle’s most reliable starter last season, finishing 16-13 with a 3.99 ERA. He posted career highs in wins, starts, innings (203) and strikeouts (147).

Gonzales starts tonight’s game against the Dodgers with a 2-2 record, 3.97 ERA, and 17 strikeouts. He lost to Texas last week allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings.
