The Dark Knight Rises: Matt Harvey Returns to MLB

Matt Harvey was famously known as “The Dark Knight” during his days with the New York Mets. In this case, The Dark Knight Rises in 2020. Matt Harvey will start the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday for the Kansas City Royals. This was first reported by Jon Heyman.

Matt Harvey signed a minor-league deal with K.C. in late July and has been working out at the team’s alternate site for the past couple weeks. His call-up comes when the Royals need pitching, as RHP Jakob Junis was placed on the 10-day IL. However, this is an opportunity for Matt Harvey to get some innings in the rotation.

Harvey was outstanding in his first three years with the Mets. He had an ERA below 3.00 in those years and led them to the 2015 World Series. However, things took a turn for the worst when he struggled throughout the 2016 season where he had some shoulder issues and he has not looked the same since.

In 2018, Matt Harvey then played for the Cincinnati Reds where he found some bit of success. During the 2018 season, he went 7-7, with a 4.50 ERA in 24 starts. However, in 2019 he pitched for the Los Angeles Angels and things were not pretty. The former All-Star posted a 7.09 ERA in 12 games with a 3-5 record. The last time Harvey appeared in the Majors was in July 2019 against the Houston Astros. Harvey went six innings but gave up six earned runs.

Reports out of the Royals alternate site in K.C. have been positive. GM Dayton Moore said he liked what he had seen from the 31-year-old. So now, we will see if “The Dark Knight Rises” in Matt Harvey and he flashes back to his early 2010’s self.
