Cleveland Browns Claim two Players off Waivers and Other Notes

Over the last few days, the Cleveland Browns have added a couple of players off waivers from the Dolphins and Bengals. One of those players will not be helping out this year. The other is a wide receiver. Based on the depth at receiver, that may surprise a few people. What we are learning is that Browns GM Andrew Berry is never satisfied. He will make a move if he thinks it can improve the roster now or down the road.

Weaver comes to the Browns after being taken in the fifth round last April by the Dolphins. Weaver left the Mountain West Conference with a record 34 sacks. He led the conference in sacks in 2017 and ‘19 and was the conference defensive player of the year in ‘19.

After just a week of practices with the Dolphins and an injured foot, the Phins tried to pass Weaver through waivers to place him on IR. That would have saved not only a roster spot but some money. Andrew Berry made sure that did not happen. According to this Dolphins writer, there were about 18 other teams that may have done the same.

At 6-2 265 pounds, Weaver is a bit of a tweener and may never be great, but that is not why this decision makes sense. For the low price of nothing at all, Berry was able to add a potential future pass rusher. Sure, he will be placed on injured reserve with a foot injury that required surgery, but this is a player 18 teams researched when he was dropped. He must have some talent.

Weaver graded out as a first-round caliber prospect per Pro Football Focus at 26th overall on their NFL Draft board. For a front office that heavily uses analytics, this is a significant win.

Damion Willis

Damion Willis spent his first NFL season with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Troy product will stay in Ohio for his second year after being claimed by the Browns. Willis joined the Bengals as an undrafted free agent last year. He worked his way up to starting week 1 in place of the injured A.J. Green. In his first NFL season, Willis appeared in ten games and caught nine passes for 82 yards. +

Willis may have a tough time sticking with the Browns, but at 6-3, he provides some size that is lacking right now. Also, wide receiver Damion Ratley has been dealing with a groin injury, so adding another body makes sense.

Other Cleveland Browns Notes

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Browns may be in on Earl Thomas. They should quickly move on. Thomas is not the player he was and has too much baggage to bring into their locker room.

Odell Beckham Jr. told Cleveland media that he feels he will have the chance to make some explosive plays in Stefanski’s offense. He also seems more comfortable in his second offseason with the Browns.

Browns’ offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt says the Browns need to have ‘a high sense of urgency’ in fast-paced training camp. The offense has looked sluggish most of training camp. If that doesn’t change soon, it could be an ugly start to the season.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is confident that the chemistry between him and OBJ will be better. They need it to be if the offense is going to get to the next level.
