FSU Football Among Many to Release Statement About Social Injustice

FSU Football

Florida State football joined most of the sports world on Thursday, and opted out of practice. Head Coach Mike Norvell has been supportive of his team choosing to use their platform and voices to speak out against social issues. He had this to say when asked about the issue.

“I think it’s huge. We get one opportunity to go through this life. If you live a life without relationships, it’s not a life worth living. You have the ability to have a positive impact on others while trying to be the best version of yourself. I told my players this morning: Be true to yourself. Be true to your heart. Be true to your actions.”

The entire Athletic Department at Florida State has stood behind their student-athletes, starting programs to be sure they were eligible to vote, and that they were able to make educated decisions about the process.

This just adds to a change that we are seeing across the country. More student-athletes have been able to speak out than ever. Usually, the schools have had measures to keep those voices quiet.

Not this year. Not FSU football.

Norvell also had this to say about his team’s courage:

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a coach and for all the relationships I’ve built,” he wrote. “Throughout my life and career as a player and a coach, I’ve been blessed to have built lifelong relationships with so many Black men on their path to success. This must STOP, we have to be part of the solution.”

FSU football wasn’t the only team to make a statement on Thursday. Many college and professional teams from every sport stopped and stood in solidarity after Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by Kenosha, WI police earlier this week.

Friday, the team met before resuming practice, and just let everything air out.

It’s a stark difference from just a couple of months ago when defensive tackle Marvin Wilson called out his head coach after a comment Norvell made. He claimed to have spoken to the entire team, but Wilson said he was never contacted.

Since then, there has been unconquered unity in Tallahassee. Hopefully, that translates into wins on the football field.
