The Raptor Report: A Champions Composure

I have fought the good fight, I have completed the race. I have kept the faith.

A Point-Guards Composure

In the almost position-less NBA, point-guard skills are being developed by more players. A point-guard needs to know every part of the offense and be the extension of the coach on-court. Each team may have a different role for their point-guard, for example in Portland, Damian Lillard is the teams primary scorer and takes the most shots. In Phoenix, Ricky Rubio is the teams facilitator for the teams offense, which is the more traditional and less popular way.

The best point guards, in my opinion, are ones that know how to facilitate, score and most importantly, control the pace of the game. The Toronto Raptors have a special point-guard in Kyle Lowry. Lowry is a specialist when it comes to controlling the pace of play for the Raptors.

A point-guard is supposed to be able to handle heavy pressure. They are not only suppose to handle pressure, but look calm and collected while doing so. Lowry’s elite level of handling pressure and controlling pace lifts the Raptors to a championship caliber team.

So when you watched the Raptors lose game one against Boston, in bad fashion, it’s time for you to be a point-guard. Don’t panic, don’t get out of control and remain calm under pressure. Trust in all the Raptors success, that has carried them this far, will continue.

Composure After a Loss

There are many excuses that fans give after their team loses:

  • “it’s hard to win, when you are playing against the refs!”
  • “our game plan was horrible”
  • “we just have so many injuries”

Don’t be that kind of fan. There is no need to panic & worry.

The Raptors lost game one because they shot 29% in the first half.

They lost game one because they got out rebounded by a team that is inferior in size.

The Raptors shot 10 of 40 from three, while Boston shot 17 of 39. A 21 point deficit from behind the arc.

The Raptors allowed a 20-point deficit in the first quarter.

Don’t panic or worry.

Great teams still lose games in the playoffs. The Raptors will shoot better from behind the arc. They will out rebound the Boston Celtics for the rest of the series. The Raptors found enough good moments in game one that will give Coach Nurse a chance to tweak the game plan going into the rest of the season. The Raptors have a championship composure that is led by an elite point-guard.

Lastly, reinforcements are coming. The families of the players are finished quarantine and can reunite. The Raptors have a lot of family guys on the team and it will definitely boost morale. Also…

Yes, I am referring to Fred VanVleet and his inspiring family that helped win an NBA Championship! #championshipchild
