Kentucky Lands 4-Star Jager Burton Over Alabama, Clemson, and Oregon

On Sunday night the news went official, the top 100, 4-star offensive lineman Jager (pronounced Jagger) Burton had chosen Kentucky over schools like Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, and Oregon.

Burton attended Lexington’s Frederick Douglass High School, and says the choice to stay at home and play for the Cats was due to assistant head coach Vince Marrow helping him through the process. Not only getting him choose UK.

“My recruitment was all turning points. I would go somewhere and then I’d want to go somewhere else and I’d ghost somebody. Wherever the last place I went was where I wanted to go. Coach Marrow kind of helped me guide my way throughout the recruiting process without even recruiting me to Kentucky, just telling me about recruiting in general. Coach Marrow was a big player in my recruitment and deserves a lot of credit.”

BACKGROUND

Burton was a defensive lineman until he switched sides in his sophomore year at Douglass. A relative unknown on the defensive side of the ball, Burton became one of the top national recruits.

The development of the offensive line, branded “The Blue Wall”, helped as well. Kentucky boasts one of the nation’s top offensive units. With two players being named to the Preseason 2nd-team AP All-American list.

The virus made it impossible to make it to any school’s campus for the final official visits. Some of the schools said they weren’t going to stop recruiting him, but Burton made sure that outside of a coaching change at UK, he won’t be moving off his commitment.

Kentucky just got major help to their already stellar group up front. But that line will lose three seniors after this year. Left tackle Landon Young, left guard Luke Fortner, and center Drake Jackson will all be gone by the time Burton gets here.

IMPACT

Having him coming in at such a time is big for him. Although those guys will be gone, the next wave of juniors stepping in are no slouches. He will have talented players to learn from.

He said picking UK would kind of make him a hometown hero. Well, he already was. Fellow Lexington native, Lafayette alum Jedrick Mills chose Alabama. Kentucky fans still rooted for him, and he was chosen in the first round by the Browns in this year’s NFL draft.
