Where Did Javier Baez Go?

The 2020 season is over halfway finished and Javier Baez has not shown up yet. Less than two seasons removed from him finishing second in MVP voting, Baez is looking like he could lose his everyday spot. Even though he’s a season-long slump, he won’t, as he is still the top shortstop in Chicago. Sorry, Tim Anderson. But where did Javier Baez go?

Baez During 2020

With the Cubs battling for the NL Central it has been disappointing that Baez has pretty much a no-show in 2020. The two-time all-star is batting a dismal .208, with 19 RBIs, although mainly hitting in the cleanup spot. If his batting couldn’t get more disappointing, Baez ranks 21st in the majors among shortstops in batting averages. Adding to the dismal rankings Baez’ .377 slugging percentage ranks 17th among shortstops league-wide.

Why is Javy Missing

A couple of things come to mind when thinking about Baez’s slump. Many may attribute his down year to the shortened season and long layoff. The long layoff could very well be the main factor in this slump, with his mind not all on the game, fans cannot expect his game to be all there.

Another mental aspect of the game is learning from the past. Baez has been outspoken lately, blaming his struggles on not being able to watch his previous at-bats during games. That rule change can be attributed to the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros. Thanks, guys.

Please Come back Javier

If the Cubs want to make a deep run into the postseason, they will need all hands on deck at full strength. That includes Baez. Baseball is a game of streaks. While other players are hot, keeping the Cubs afloat, fans are hoping Baez finds his game and gets hot at the right time. Where did Javier go? When will he be back? Time will tell.
