Chiefs vs Texans Week 1 Preview

The defending champion Chiefs open up with Deshaun Watson and the Texans coming to town. Who will win the duel of Patrick Mahomes vs Watson?

Chiefs Passing Game

In 2019 the Texans gave up the fourth most passing yards per game. The Texans secondary looks to be just as bad this season. Bradley Roby allowed 62.2% of his passes to be caught and Lonnie Johnson gave up seven touchdowns in 2019. The team didn’t do much to bring in help this off-season. Pro Football Focus has the Texans secondary ranked as the 25th worst.

The Chiefs offense has all of its stars returning plus rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce will be dominant as usual but eyes will be on Edwards-Helaire and Mecole Hardman. Hardman will be more involved in the offense this year and that has a strong chance to start this week. The Texans defense has so little and what they do have will be focused on Hill and Kelce. Hardman will be able to use his blazing speed to take advantage of a subpar secondary.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire

The Chiefs will look to get their rookie running back acclimated to the game quickly much like they did with Kareem Hunt in the 2017 season opener. The Texans don’t have anyone who can cover Edwards-Helaire out of the backfield consistently. The Texans run defense was just as bad as their pass defense in 2019 giving up the eighth most rushing yards. Edwards-Helaire will be given every chance to take advantage of this plus match up.

Chiefs Defense

The defense largely remains intact and added speedy linebacker Willie Gay Jr. The secondary has questions. Rashad Fenton allowed just 53.6% of passes his way to be caught and Charvarious Ward allowed 48% of his targets to be caught. Neither were spectacular but both were solid. DeAndre Hopkins is gone so there will be no premier threat that the corners have to cover. The Texans do have Will Fuller and Brandin Cooks who have made their name off of their speed. Tyrann Mathieu will help slow down the big plays but the speed will be an issue for the Chiefs.

The Texans added David Johnson to be their new starting running back. Johnson is finally healthy and ready to put his injury woes behind him. He could be a huge problem for a defense that was horrendous against running backs in 2019. The defense gave up the seventh most rushing yards and they gave up the most receiving yards to running backs with a whopping 951 yards. David Johnson became a star in the league due to his ability to run and catch out of the backfield. The Chiefs added rookie Willie Gay Jr to add speed and give them someone to help stop running backs. He will have a big test in week 1.

Injury Report

Travis Kelce showed up on the injury report Tuesday but both teams are healthy and will be a full go.

Prediction

The Chiefs will be playing in prime time on opening night as they hang a Super Bowl banner. The excitement from the moment will carry over into the game. The Texans don’t have enough on offense to keep up as the defense bleeds yards. Deshaun Watson will do everything he can to carry the team but he can only do so much.

Chiefs 37-Texans 24
