The New York Giants will kick off the 2020 NFL season against the Pittsburgh Steelers this Monday Night. Giants vs. Steelers, a matchup that hasn’t occurred since 2016, and it’s safe to say a lot has changed since then. Daniel Jones now enters his sophomore season with a young offense and a new Head Coach Joe Judge, former special teams coordinator for the New England Patriots. A friendly return for the Pittsburgh Steelers is future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who is coming off of a shoulder injury. Both teams will battle it out to obtain their first win of the season.
Neither team suffers vital injuries. The most devastating injury would be the loss of rookie safety Xavier McKinney to a foot injury. Fans have been excited to see how the duo of McKinney and Jabrill Peppers would perform on the field together, and now they’ll have to wait a lot longer. Golden Tate was day to day with a hamstring injury but participated in Wednesday and Thursday practices. For the Steelers, wide receiver Diontae Johnson and well-known guard David Decastro did not participate in practice. The Steelers definitely want to make sure Big Ben is protected in the pocket because this is his first game back from injury, so Decastro not playing could be a serious problem for Pittsburgh.
It’s clear the Steelers have a far superior defense than the Giants, so scoring should be extremely difficult for the offense. However, despite losing McKinney, the Giants defense will be able to stop a relatively weak Pittsburgh offense. Performing at the level expected of Big Ben after coming off that shoulder injury at the age of 38 will be very difficult, which will be crucial in the Giants defense making big plays.
