The Kansas City Chiefs could not have started off the 2020 season any better. They won their first four games and were riding off a big victory Monday against the New England Patriots. However, six days later, they lose their first game of the season to AFC West rival in the Las Vegas Raiders 40-32. This is the first time the Raiders beat the Chiefs in Kansas City since 2012 when Carson Palmer led the then Oakland Raiders to victory.
Derek Carr played his best game of the season throwing for 347 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Along with Carr, RB Josh Jacobs continued what he started in his rookie season. Jacobs had 23 carries for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns on the day. Rookie WR Henry Ruggs III torched the Chiefs secondary with his 2 catches for 118 yards and 1 touchdown.
First Half Shootout
Kansas City got a 14-3 lead courtesy of a Patrick Mahomes 3 yard run and a Tyreek Hill 10 yard run. However, Las Vegas answered with a few scores of their own. The Chiefs then lead 14-10 a few minutes into the second quarter. Tyreek Hill made a crazy catch along the sideline that then set up WR Sammy Watkins to catch a pass from Mahomes to extend the Chiefs lead back to 11.
Derek Carr then threw two touchdowns to give Las Vegas the lead 24-21. However, K Harrison Butker tied the game right before half with a 32-yard field goal.
Second Half Woes
The third quarter was a stalemate between both teams as neither the Chiefs nor Raiders got on the board. Not very often do you see the Kansas City offense not put up points for a long stretch of time. However, Las Vegas started the fourth with Josh Jacobs rushing for a touchdown. However, K Daniel Carlson missed the PAT, so the Raiders led 30-24.
Las Vegas added another Jacobs rushing touchdown along with a field goal to add to their lead. Patrick Mahomes, making his 41st career start counting the postseason, has never lost by double digits.
However, Mahomes tried to hit TE Travis Kelce over the middle of the field on 4th down in their own territory and threw an interception, which set up the Raiders for a Josh Jacobs rushing touchdown to extend the Raider lead to 40-24.
Mahomes found TE Travis Kelce for a late score to make it 40-32. Despite this, it was too late as the Raiders ran out the clock to win their first road game since week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.
What Is Next?
The Chiefs now are 4-1 on the season and hope to bounce back against the Buffalo Bills. The Bills currently are slated to play the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday. This means that Kansas City will play Buffalo on Monday instead of Thursday. This will be the third time this season the Chiefs will be playing on Monday night in 2020. The last time K.C. lost back-to-back games was in 2019 when they lost to the Colts and Texans in week 5 and 6.
