Yesterday was a very good day for the statistical underdogs, as they won seven of the fifteen games yesterday in MLB action. Unfortunately, this column did not fare so well yesterday as we only picked one of those correctly. Before we look at six teams to bet on Thursday, let’s review how we did last week, since today starts the second week of this column.
6/20-6/26: We went 17 for 38 over the seven day period. If the bettor had put $50 on every game we selected, the bettor would have won $101.75 on the week. That number was over $300 until we hit a bad stretch of games yesterday. Let’s start week two the right way, with some winners.
Here are six teams that you should bet on Thursday.
Tampa Bay Rays (+110) @ Minnesota Twins, 1:10 PM EST Start

Things have went from the penthouse to the outhouse for the Tampa Bay Rays. Once the AL East division leader, they now find themselves seven games behind the Yankees and only two games ahead of the Red Sox. They are 3-7 in their last ten games, and are 10-15 in the month of June.
Having said all that, today’s pitching match-up really favors the Rays. The Rays will start with Ryne Stanek, and then most likely turn the game over to Jalen Beeks. Stanek and Beeks both have ERA’s under 3.00 and have pitched very well this season.
The Twins are countering with Martin Perez. Perez is 7-3 on the season with a 4.28 ERA. Perez has struggled recently, however, as he has given up four or more runs in each of his last five starts. The first of those was on May 30 at Tampa Bay, when he gave up six runs in less than three innings of work.
Look for Tampa Bay to avoid the sweep today, and take advantage of the struggling Martin Perez. Bet them with confidence.
New York Mets (+120) @ Philadelphia Philles, 1:05 PM EST Start

On Thursday, the Phillies will be looking to complete a four game sweep of the Mets. This is a complete reversal of fortune from last weekend, which saw the Mets split a series in Wrigley Field, and the Phillies get swept by the Miami Marlins.
Today’s pitching match-up features two pitchers who pitched well in their last outing, after having recent struggles. Zack Wheeler gave up one run in seven innings against the Cubs, after giving up five and nine runs in his two starts before that. Aaron Nola gave up two runs in eight innings against the Marlins, after giving up 14 runs in 16 and 1/3 innings in his three previous starts.
Wheeler has given up three runs in fourteen innings this year against the Phillies. Nola gave up five runs in four innings during his only start against the Mets this year. Due to these factors, bet the Mets today to avoid getting swept by the Phillies.
Chicago Cubs (-101) vs. Atlanta Braves, 1:20 PM EST Start

The first of the two big mid-season free agent signings made his appearance at Wrigley field yesterday, as Dallas Keuchel earned his first win of the season in a 5-3 win over the Cubs. Today, the second big mid-season free agent may get to make his appearance, as it looks like the Cubs will be activating Craig Kimbrel before Thursday’s ballgame.
The pitching match-up in this game pits youngster Bryse Wilson for the Braves against Tyler Chatwood for the Cubs. Wilson was called up last week for the Braves and gave up four runs in 4 and 1/3 innings of work during his first start. Chatwood has been slotted in the rotation since Kyle Hendricks went on the IL. He gave up three runs over four innings in his last start against the Mets.
With this pretty even pitching match-up, look for the Cubs to use Kimbrel’s activation as motivation to win today’s game and split the four game series with Atlanta. Also note that the Cubs have not lost more than two consecutive games at home all season. Bet them with confidence today.
Texas Rangers (-116) @ Detroit Tigers, 1:10 PM EST Start

Today’s game may be an early season test for the Texas Rangers, helping to give us an idea whether or not they are a playoff contender. The Rangers, who currently own the second wild card spot, find themselves eight games over .500 (44-36) and are on a four game winning streak. When you are in the thick of a playoff race, you have to beat the teams you are supposed to beat, and today is one of those games.
The Detroit Tigers are 1-9 in their last 10 games, and are on a six game losing streak. They will send Spencer Turnbull to the mound today, who has yet to win a game at home this season. He is 0-4 this season at Comerica Park, giving up 26 runs over 42 innings of work. The Rangers will send Ariel Jurado to the mound today, who has struggled in his last two starts (11 runs in nine innings). He did have four consecutive quality starts before his last two starts though.
Look for the Rangers to take advantage of the reeling Tigers and finish off the three game sweep at Detroit. Bet them with confidence today.
Oakland Athletics (+148) @ Los Angeles Angels, 10:07 PM EST Start

In a battle of AL West teams, the A’s and Angels open up a very important four game series in Los Angeles on Thursday. The A’s and Angels both are within striking distance of the wild card, and have now pulled to within seven and nine games respectively of the division leading Houston Astros.
Thursday’s pitching match-up fetaures two youngsters as Oakland send 26-year-old Tanner Anderson to the mound, and the Angels send 23-year-old Griffin Canning to the mound. Anderson is looking to get his first win of the season, as he is 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA over three starts this season. Canning is 2-4 with a 3.88 ERA, and is win-less in his last six starts.
This will be the third time in six starts that Canning will be facing the Athletics. He was very respectable in his first two starts, giving up five runs over 12 innings in those two starts. The Angels have yet to see Tanner Anderson this season.
Look for the Athletics to ride their recent success (7-3 in their last 10 games), and their experience against Canning tonight to win game one of this series.
Today’s Flier: Colorado Rockies (+180) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

The Rockies are returning home after a nine game road trip in which they went 5-4. The road trip would have been better, if it hadn’t been for the Dodgers winning three games against the Rockies with walk-off home runs.
The Dodgers have owned the Rockies this season, going 6-0 in their six meetings this season. The Dodgers will send Walker Buehler to the mound on Thursday, and he has been phenomenal in June. Over his four June starts, he has given up three runs and 15 hits in 31 innings of work. During those four starts, he has also struck out 42 batters.
On paper, this seems like it should be a lock for the Dodgers. However, they are coming off losing two of three to the Diamondbacks this week, and the Rockies should be angry after being swept last weekend. The Rockies send Peter Lambert to the mound, who gave up three runs in five innings last weekend against the Dodgers.
Look for the Rockies to come out motivated and angry, and shock the Dodgers in game one of this four game series.
