Sunday Fun-day: Nine Teams to Bet (6/30)

Saturday was a decent day for statistical underdogs, as six out of fifteen games were won by teams that were the underdog. Our column did okay yesterday, going 4 for 8 in the games we picked. We were up $19.23 on the day, so in our ten days of this column, we are 29 for 59 and are up $339.98 over that ten day period (with all 59 bets being $50). Just like yesterday’s column, we are going to take some statistical underdogs, and some favorites as well on Sunday.

Here are nine teams that you should consider betting on Sunday June 30.

Philadelphia Phillies (-130) @ Miami Marlins, 1:10 PM EST Start

The Phillies turn to Jake Arrieta to salvage the final game in this weekend’s series against the Miami Marlins.

The Miami Marlins have the number of the Philadelphia Phillies. They have won five games against them in nine days, and they look to sweep this weekend’s series when the teams meet on Sunday afternoon. This is not a must win game for the Phillies, but it is a very critical game for them. Over the weekend, they lost two games on the Atlanta Braves in the standings, and they do not want to lose another one.

The Marlins will send Trevor Richards to the mound to get the sweep for the Marlins. Richards is 3-8 on the season, with a 3.94 ERA. In his last three outings, he has given up 22 hits and 11 runs in 15 and 2/3 innings pitched. Over his last four starts, his offense has given him a total of two runs to work with in those four games. It is not a shock to see that the Marlins lost all four of those starts. In his only start against the Phillies this season, he gave up five runs in four innings of work. In that game, he lost to his counterpart on the day, who just happened to be Jake Arrieta.

The Phillies will counter with Jake Arrieta on Sunday. Arrieta is 7-6 on the season, with a 4.33 ERA. Arrieta has won both of his starts against Miami this season, giving up six runs in twelve innings of work (4.50 ERA). While he has struggled this season (he has given up four or more runs seven times), look for Arrieta to show veteran leadership and lead the Phillies to a win that they desperately need.

Atlanta Braves (-105) @ New York Mets, 7:08 PM EST Start

It has been a rough week for Mets manager Mickey Callaway (pictured above) and his bullpen. The Mets have lost six games this week, and their bullpen has blown a lead in five of those six games.

The Mets are in free-fall mode. They have lost seven games in a row and are 2-8 in their last 10 games. The bullpen has been absolutely atrocious, and it blew another game on Saturday night. The Mets were up 4-3 in the 8th inning, when Seth Lugo gave up back-to-back home runs to Nick Markakis and Austin Riley, which eventually led to a 5-4 Mets loss.

The good news for the Mets is the return of Thor on Sunday night. Noah Syndergaard returns after a brief stint on the IL. However, his return isn’t what the Mets need to win a ball-game. Syndergaard has been iffy this season, going 5-4 with a 4.55 ERA. In addition, Syndergaard is 0-2 in his seven career starts against the Braves.

The Braves will counter with Max Fried on Sunday night. Fried is 9-3 on the season, with a 3.96 ERA. His only start against the Mets came on June 19, in which he gave up two runs over six innings in a 7-2 Braves win. The Braves have won eight of his last nine starts, including his last five road starts.

Bet the Braves to finish off the sweep tonight and ruin the return of Noah Syndergaard.

Texas Rangers (+182) @ Tampa Bay Rays, 1:10 PM EST Start

Blake Snell has been terrible in his past three starts. Will he be better today?

Simon and Garfunkel sang the line “Where have you gone, Joe Dimaggio?” in their classic hit Mrs. Robinson. Right now, Rays fans are asking, “where have you gone, Blake Snell?” Last year’s American League Cy Young Award winner has been far from himself in June. In his five starts in June, he has given up 30 hits, 12 walks, and 24 runs in only 17 and 1/3 innings of work. That equates to a 12.46 ERA and a 2.42 WHIP in the month of June.

The Rangers will counter with Jesse Chavez on Sunday, who has welcomed his trip back to the starting rotation. Chavez has mainly been a reliever in the past few seasons, but the Rangers have elevated the 35 year old due to his great pitching this year. In his last two starts, Chavez has given up two runs in 11 and 1/3 innings of work (1.59 ERA). On the season, Chavez has a 2.79 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.

This column has taken the Rangers on Friday and Saturday in this series. We will make it three days in a row today, as we say bet the Rangers with confidence to win the series on Sunday.

Kansas City Royals (+114) @ Toronto Blue Jays, 1:07 PM EST Start

Brad Keller has received very poor run support from his offense. How will he fare today?

Hopefully, third time’s a charm for our column in this series. On Friday and Saturday, we said to take the Royals. Saturday’s game was a heart-breaker, as they gave up a walk off two run home run to catcher Danny Jansen, which was only his fourth home run of the year. Well, today we are going to try again.

Sunday’s pitching match-up features two pitchers that have had less than stellar years. The Blue Jays send Aaron Sanchez to the hill to wrap up the sweep for the Blue Jays. Sanchez is 3-10 on the season, with a 5.89 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. He has given up 22 runs in his last 12 innings of work (16.50 ERA). The Jays have lost 10 of his 11 starts in May and June.

The Royals will send Brad Keller to the mound. Keller has a similar record as Sanchez, but his numbers are better. Keller is 3-9 on the season, with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. The Royals have lost eleven of his last twelve starts, but he has pitched better than a 3-9 record would show. In the nine games the Royals lost with Keller on the mound in May and June, they scored three runs or less in all nine games, and scored two runs or less in eight of those nine games.

Look for today to be the day that Keller finally gets some run support. You shouldn’t expect either pitcher to be great today, but expect Keller to be better and take the Royals to avoid the sweep.

Cincinnati Reds (+111) vs. Chicago Cubs, 1:10 PM EST Start

Jon Lester has been bad in his last three road starts. How will he do today in Cincinnati?

Here is another series in which we have picked this game every day of the series. We have taken the Reds both days and have went 1-1 so far.

The Cubs will send Jon Lester to the mound to win this series for the Cubs. Lester is 7-5 on the season, with a 3.83 ERA. He has been much better at home though in May and June than he has been on the road. He is 0-3 in his last three road starts, and he has given up 27 hits, 5 walks, and 18 runs over 15 innings of work (10.80 ERA).

The Reds will send Anthony Desclafani to the mound against Lester. He has a record of 4-4 on the season with a 4.70 ERA. He has been consistent at home this season, giving up four runs or less in all six of his starts at the Great American Ball Park this season. His last outing at Milwaukee was bad (six runs in 4 and 1/3 innings), but he gave up one run in each of his other three June starts.

If the Reds want to make a run at the National League Central division title, it needs to start today with a win against the Cubs. Take the Reds to get to Lester today, and win the final game of this series.

Pittsburgh Pirates (+145) @ Milwaukee Brewers, 2:10 PM EST Start

Zach Davies has struggled in his last three starts. Look for that trend to continue today.

This is another game we have featured in this column in every game of this series. We took the Pirates both days and have went 1-1. Sunday’s match-up between the Pirates and Brewers features two pitchers that are going in opposite directions.

The Pirates will send Steven Brault to the mound to try to win the rubber match of this series. Brault was a long reliever for the first part of the season, and due to injuries, the Pirates turned him into a starter in mid-May. He has responded by lowering his ERA from 8.24 to 4.50 since that change, and he has given up three runs or less in all six of his starts (two runs or less in five of those starts).

Zach Davies had a phenomenal start to the season. After June 8, he was 7-0 with a 2.41 ERA. Since that time, his record has fallen to 7-2 and his ERA has gone up to 3.34. In his last three starts, he has given up 14 runs in 11 and 1/3 innings of work (11.12 ERA).

Even though the Pirates have only scored four runs in this series, look for them to get their bats going in this game and take the rubber match of the series.

San Francisco Giants (+100) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks, 4:05 PM EST Start

Look for Madison Bumgarner to lead the Giants to a win on Sunday afternoon.

The Giants and Diamondbacks will meet for the final game of a four game set on Sunday afternoon. Arizona has taken two of the first three, but San Francisco has their ace on the mound on Sunday.

Madison Bumgarner is one of the top names that are being thrown around for a trade this season. Even though he is 4-7 on the season with a 4.21 ERA, he can still be a dominant pitcher. In his six home starts in May and June, he has given up three earned runs or less in all of them. In his only start this year against Arizona, he gave up four runs in 6 and 1/3 innings of work in an 8-5 win in Arizona.

The DBacks counter with Robbie Ray on Sunday. Ray is 5-5 on the season, with a 3.90 ERA. In his two starts against the Giants this season, he has given up four runs over 9 and 1/3 innings of work. Arizona has lost six of the last eight games in which Ray has started.

Look for Bumgarner to lead the Giants to a win in this game. Bet them with confidence.

San Diego Padres (-114) vs. St. Louis Cardinals, 4:10 PM EST Start

Joey Lucchesi has been great at home this season. Will that trend continue on Sunday?

The Cardinals have been struggling as of late, losing five straight games and losing seven of their last ten. They are looking to avoid getting swept on Sunday afternoon by the Padres. That may be an uphill battle for them to fight.

The Cardinals will send Miles Mikolas to the mound. He is 5-8 on the season, with a 4.33 ERA. Only one of his five wins this season has come on the road, and he has given up 16 runs in 16 and 1/3 innings of work in his last four road starts(8.82 ERA).

The Padres send Joey Lucchesi to the mound to wrap up the sweep on Sunday. He is 6-4 on the season, with a 3.95 ERA. He has had great success at home this season, as all six of his wins have come at home. In his five home starts in May and June, he has given up 10 runs in 30 and 1.3 innings of work (2.97 ERA).

Look for Lucchesi’s home success to continue, and bet the Padres to win Sunday’s game.

Chicago White Sox (-108) vs. Minnesota Twins, 2:10 PM EST Start

Look for White Sox ace Lucas Giolito to improve his record to 11-2 on Sunday afternoon.

After winning eight straight starts, Lucas Giolito fell back down to earth after struggling in starts at Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. He returns home on Sunday, however, to Guaranteed Rate Field against a division rival.

Giolito has given up eight runs in his five home starts in May and June, pitching 31 and 1/3 innings in those starts(2.30 ERA). He has yet to face the Twins this season, and will be looking to improve his record to 11-2 on the season with a win on Sunday.

The Twins are countering with rookie call-up Lewis Thorpe on Sunday. It was originally supposed to be Kyle Gibson in this start, but the Twins pushed him back due to him having to appear in Thursday’s 18-inning game with the Rays. Thorpe has been so-so at Triple-A this year, going 3-4 on the season with a 5.71 ERA.

Look for Giolito to pitch well enough to lead the White Sox to the win on Sunday afternoon.
